Andy Hayman – the UK’s most bent copper

13-07-2011 09:10

Andy Hayman sat before a government home affairs select committee over the phone hacking scandal at the News of the World that he was charged with investigating in 2005 and, despite his barrow-boy-made-good persona and incredulous performance, lied through his teeth. We take a brief look at the history of the most bent copper the UK has produced in some time.

Israel used Facebook to stop European pro-Palestine activists

13-07-2011 08:46

Israeli intelligence services managed to stop dozens of European pro-Palestine activists from flying to Israel, by gathering open-source intelligence about them on social media sites, such as Facebook. According to Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor, intelligence gathered on Facebook formed the basis of a blacklist containing over 300 names of European activists, who had signed up on an open-access Facebook page of a group planning nonviolent actions in Israel this summer

Pangea Project sponsored by BNFL rules out Cumbria

12-07-2011 23:55

Radiation Free Lakeland have just discovered a leaked 1999 promotional video largely sponsored  by BNFL which notes that areas of "high rainfall, permeable rocks and mountains"  would make the land too fiercely radioactive to sustain life if high level waste was dumped underground.

Following the failure of the UK plan for a nuclear waste dump in Cumbria in 1997, the Pangea project was put forward for a high level waste dump in Australia.   BNFL was the major backer.  The proposal was thrown out by Australian state and federal parliaments in 2000.

The Pangea Project no longer has a website but there is a leaked promotional video produced by the Partners -BNFL, Golder Associates and Swiss radioactive waste quango Nagra.

"There is a good degree of consensus worldwide by governments and scientists that geological disposal is the most viable option", the Pangea video claims.  But if there was any scientific and political consensus on the wisdom and safety of "geological disposal"  Yucca Mountain would now be a high level waste dump run by URS Washington on behalf of the American Dept of Energy.  Instead URS Washington has scuttled out of America and set up shop in Cumbria hoping that we are a softer touch this time round.

So-called "geological disposal" - the equivalent of hundreds of Blackpool Towers underground filled with the world's high level wastes is an out-of-sight, out-of-mind confidence trick.

This official short video outlines the need for "large flat, dry, remote areas" and rules out the idea of putting nuclear waste in areas where there is any of the following: "high rainfall, permeable rocks, and mountains which would drive the water flow"  and make the land too fiercely radioactive to sustain life.

(CAUTION: the YouTube video comments reflect the strength of feeling in Australia against the proposal to dump the world's nuclear waste in a

remote, flat, dry, large, expanse of land)

Thousands turn out against EDL in Cambridge. Part 2

12-07-2011 19:56

F.I.T. Watched. Unlike them though, I publish what I shoot.
The police were careful to keep both demos very separate, and went to great lengths (and doubtless great expense, including keeping the copper chopper in the sky all afternoon), to ensure that each demo happened at opposite ends of town.

Thousands turn out against EDL in Cambridge. Part 1

12-07-2011 19:31

Even a clown turned up!
Last Saturday (July 9th, 2011), the people of Cambridge voted en masse with their feet and took to the streets in response to their city being paid a visit by the English Defence League (EDL).

The EDL, who despite most of them having commuted into the town for their own demo on the same day, claimed to speak on behalf of the people of Cambridge by raising objections to plans to build a Mosque and Community Centre at the far end of Mill Road, to replace the smaller overcrowded one on Mawson Road.

Korean on Hunger Strike for Peace at Parliament Sq

FREEDOM AND UNITY FOR ALL KOREANS -OPEN THE BORDER-

Okwhan Yoon is from South Korea. He recently arived at Parliament Square and started his hunger strike on 26th June 2011.

He has been on a ten year, global cycling tour, in order to inspire and  promote the message of peace.

Okwhan is now on day16 of his strike, demanding  freedom for  North Korea and the opening of the border with South Korea bring with it democracy for the people!

60 years of isolation and oppression has now past and the time has come for the  people to make a peaceful stand for change.

As you will appreciate, being a cyclist, his body weight is minimal, and so the hunger strike will take its toll on him quciker than a person with greater body mass.

He is a gentleman, quiet and thoughtful. He is also determined with a strong mental focus.

A press release has been sent out. Also the All party group for both North and South Korea have been notified that he is at the square.

We encourage people to support him in his great struggle. He is sincere in his effort.

Free Francis Fernie. Resist political sentencing

12-07-2011 16:48

Francis Fernie
Last week, a 20 year old man was given twelve months for violent disorder relating to protests on March 26th outside Fortnum and Masons. He threw two placard sticks, neither of which hurt anyone nor were capable of causing harm.

This man, pictured in one of Operation Malone's witch hunts, handed himself in, gave admissions in interview and plead guilty at the first available opportunity. In mitigation his barrister explained he travelled to the demo because felt strongly about the cuts, did a lot of voluntary work and was due to start university in September.

Offmarket: evicted space, project still alive!

12-07-2011 13:55

After a bit more than 3 full on months of activity, the Offmarket squatted social centre on 121 Lower Clapton road was evicted by Bailiffs, police and owners on Thursday 7th July 2011.

The second Offmarket space was opened last April. We had a visit from the owners only 12 hours after moving in. Our first contact was pretty horrible, as all the other times we had to deal with them, ranging from "you scum of the earth" to "you should all be gassed to death"... lovely innit?

Still, in the few months we got out of the space we managed to do some amazing things. Tons of workshops and regular activities, resources that allowed dozens of people to start their own squats, a hugely successful freeshop that ended up being run mostly by locals...

The court case started early and after few postponings, the owners finally got their possession order and they decided to enforce it last thursday. Some of the bailiffs heavies managed to get inside the space early on in the morning but got kicked out. Some more arrived and they finally managed to break it after some efforts. Few people came to support, which was nice given the short notice. WellFurnished crew was very supportive and helpful as well, thanks for the solidarity!

The Offmarket collective will very probably take a well deserved break but will be back soon for a new space! check this space

The British security service is the elephant within the room in the Murdoch press hacking scandal

12-07-2011 11:38

The Guardian, along with the rest of the MSM have so far managed to ignore the elephant within the room in the Murdoch press hacking scandal. One would have thought given the latest revelations about Gordon Brown and his family, someone might have asked the question exactly what was the British Secret Intelligence Service doing whilst News International hacked into the British prime ministers private life.

Protests in Notts Mark 63rd Anniversary of NHS

12-07-2011 08:55

On Tuesday 5th July, the NHS marked its 63rd anniversary. Campaigners in Notts marked the event with a series of protests against the Health and Social Care Bill. On Tuesday there were protests at Bassetlaw Hospital and London Road roundabout, Nottingham. The following Saturday campaigners held a day of action for the NHS which included a trial of Health Secretary Andrew Lansley and visits to Virgin Media, HSBC and Vodafone, all implicated in different ways in the current situation of the NHS.

On the newswire: Virgin: Hands Off Our NHS! | Anti-Privatisation Campaigners Protest Virgin | HSBC occupied to save the NHS | NHS Anniversary Event: BBC roundabout, Nottingham | Campaigners celebrate 63rd Birthday of the NHS | Notts SOS calls for action to save our NHS | Save Our NHS Day of Action: Saturday July 9th

Previous features: Notts Uncut: Emergency Operation | Notts Rejects Plans For NHS | Nottingham Mobilises to Save NHS

Events included a rally at Speakers’ Corner, Market Square, in which Health Secretary Andrew Lansley was “put on trial” followed by a demonstration outside Virgin Media, part of the Virgin Group, who are well positioned to capitalise on the impacts of the Bill. Meanwhile Notts Uncut demonstrated outside HSBC who have been capitalising on PFI schemes to rip-off the NHS and well-known tax dodgers Vodafone.
