crouch end lib-dem protest today (pics)

11-12-2010 19:22

around 120 people turned up to a protest in crouch end demanding the resignation of lib-dem MP lynne featherstone for breaking her election pledges. interestingly, it was the more radical speeches that seemed to resonate with and enthuse those attending. seems like revolution is in the air even in the middle-class white media village that is crouch end!

the protest, called by 'right to work' and the 'trades council' was an open mic affair, with around a dozen speakers demonstrating a range of views. the predictable labour activist promised investment and growth under a future labour government after apologising for the iraq war. people didn't seem over-impressed. a green party activist made an appearance and got a slightly better response.

but the surprise of the protest to me was the very real support for students, applause for their bravery, and lack of condemnation of their vandalism or alleged violence. socialist worker activist, gary mcfarlan, gave a first hand account of the police repression and brutality meted out on thursday, exposed the media lies that the police intention was to facilitate the protest, and roused the crowd with talk of a need to get rid of all the current political parties and self-seeking politicians. he even managed to do this without mentioning his party as the only alternative too!

he was followed by another radical call from an 'education activist network' speaker, who called for more protests and for more support from unions, benefits claimants, nurses, firemen, and all others who have yet to be affected by the impending cuts.

this fighting talk really seemed to have the most resonance with the crowd, and it is apparent there is beginning to be a sea-change in political consciousness.

other special interest speakers highlighted the tory proposals to virtually abolish council housing, and the heavy cuts in disability provision.

younger generations were represented by school student labour activist, and even by a primary school boy who bravely took the mic and called for the tories to be defeated.

two bicycle police were detailed to keep an eye on the protest and make sure it didn't develop into a march to lynne featherstone's office to smash a few windows, but, it being crouch end, there was little danger of that today, and after an hour the crowd dispersed peacefully without being kettled, batoned, charged at on horseback, or otherwise repressed.

still, 120 in attendance and the biggest cheers for the more radical voices - not something i'd have predicted for crouch end even a couple of months ago.

there's an online petition to recall lynne featherstone and force a by-election. sign it here

A comparison between the almost concurrent bail applications of Julian Assange and Shrien Dewani indicates blatant political bias in the Assange case.

Date set for UKCMRI Lab Council Planning Decision

11-12-2010 17:22

A date has now been set for a committee to consider the highly controversial proposed UKCMRI bioresearch laboratory planning application at Camden Town Hall on Thursday, 16th December from 7pm. The Evening Standard has found out about a "high security plan" for the proposed lab. More below.......

DATE SET FOR COUNCIL DECISION: A date has now been set for the Development Control Committee to consider the UKCMRI application at Camden Town Hall, Judd Street, London, on 16th December, from 7pm onwards. It seems 90 tickets will be given out on the day, possibly at around 6.30pm for entry as there is limited space. Written submissions (objections/comments re the application of equivalent of no more than 2 sides of A4 paper) or a request to speak at the meeting (with summary of what you would like to say) can be sent by email, post, or hand-delivered by 9am, 15th December to: Clerk to the Development Control Committee -email address: dc@camden.gov.uk - postal address: Committee Services, Camden Town Hall, Judd Street, London, WC1H 9JE. Written submissions seem important as they are likely to be viewed directly on the day, not just incorporated into the planning report.

HIGH SECURITY PLAN: The Evening Standard has found out some explosive news about a "security management plan" for the proposed UKCMRI centre- link to report here.

NEW PARLIAMENTARY COMMITTEE INQUIRY ANNOUNCED: The Science and Technology Committee has announced a new inquiry into the UKCMRI project. This is separate from the planning application made to Camden Council. Link here to more information on Indymedia London website.

BACKGROUND: A  planning application process is now underway for the massive UKCMRI bioresearch laboratory project planned to handle extremely dangerous pathogens in 79,000 square metres of building, alongside St Pancras International Station. Estimated to cost £600 million and a further £100 million per year to operate, the government have offered £220 million towards this at a time of brutal cutbacks. Link here to more information on Indymedia London website.

Free Julian Assange! Hands Off WikiLeaks!

11-12-2010 14:55

The December 7 arrest in London of Julian Assange, the founder and editor-in-chief of the Internet investigative site WikiLeaks, is a threat to freedom of the press and an attempt to silence critics who expose the bloody deeds of imperialism. We are convinced, along with many others, that Assange is innocent of the trumped up accusations of the crimes of rape and sexual molestation that are being manipulated by Swedish authorities to request his detention and extradition. His main accuser is an anti-Communist social-democratic operative. It is clear that sinister forces are pushing the persecution of this courageous man, and his life could be in danger. The criminal forces who are behind this frame-up are first and foremost, the United States government of Barack Obama and its military and spy agencies. They seek to silence whistleblowers who have not only caused them diplomatic embarrassment but also lifted a corner of the veil on Washington’s Murder, Inc. We demand that Assange be freed, that all charges against him be dropped, including those now being prepared and that Private Bradley Manning, accused of leaking documents that incriminate the U.S., be freed as well.

Action on fees and education cuts in Nottingham

11-12-2010 12:23

Saturday 4th December 2010, 1-5pm

Day of action on student fees and education cuts in Nottingham. oh, and corporate tax evasion.

The day started with a protest at the Vodafone store in Clumber Street at 1pm.  In common with many other cities, people marched onto Topshop and Boots stores then continued onto the Square.

This is where folk linked up with the anti-fees/cuts action demo that was being taken by Nottingham students and staff at both Nottingham Trent University and University of Nottingham today (now supported by UCU and NUS locally), This a Third Day of Action Against Cuts to Education had been called to take place in the Market Square, Nottingham city centre,

An improptu march then started up visiting a number of other businesses to express their concerns.  All working through the Boots in Parliament Street and though the Victoria Centre and through Topshop.  Much the amazement of customers and staff there :-)  The march then continued to the Conservative Party HQ [replete with it's previously broken window, were folks chanted at an empty building. Well, it was Saturday.

The organisers said they were keen that this was not only involving students but all who will be affected by the education cuts and fees increases and encourage creative methods of protest,

“The student occupations at Edinburgh, Newcastle, Cambridge and UCL universities, and the Royal Holloway Against Cuts group have all voted to call for a day of local demonstrations across the UK against cuts in education. We need to draw in all the other groups who are fighting against cuts, and who want to support our fight to save education and defend EMA. In Nottingham we are holding a rally in the city centre, for everyone affected by the cuts to the public sector. This isn’t just for university students, it’s also for teachers, staff, lecturers, college students, secondary school pupils, primary school pupils, parents, workers in the public sector, trade unionists."
