More Barclays Demos in Barclays

18-02-2009 18:11

Tuesday 17th February

What better way could one of us spend our birthday than standing up for the animals and naming and shaming animal abusers? We were feeling so generous we thought we'd even give Barclays a few presents of our own - so we headed there with our placards, leaflets, banner and megaphone we made sure they wouldn't feel left out as we know from previous demos they truly appreciate being exposed of their unethical investments in HLS.

The problem with extremists

18-02-2009 18:07

Take it to the limit
normblog 18/02/2009 15:52 Norm
The problem with describing a view as 'extreme' and the person who holds it as an 'extremist' is that it assumes some nearby point relative to which the putative extreme and putative extremist are thus distantly situated; and it assumes that it's the very distance that matters. Take the idea that people are to be considered extremists if they 'fail to condemn the killing of British soldiers in Iraq or Afghanistan'. Not even if they approve of or condone it; if they merely fail to condemn it.

Why I’m hardline on environmental issues

18-02-2009 17:51

A lot of the time, I quote other people simply because they’ve said what I wanted to but never got around to it. I frequently get criticised on here for taking a hardline stance on environmental issues, especially on supporting groups like Plane Stupid, because they’re seen as too alienating. Because Middle England won’t agree, the argument goes, these people are a danger to the cause. I always disagree.

Latest Policewatch videos

18-02-2009 11:42

On 16th February 2009 the Counter-Terrorism Act 2008 comes into operation, which threatens to make it illegal to take a photo of a police officer, or to elicit information about them. So bang goes alerting people to cops spying on peaceful protestors, and bang, clunk go journalists investigating police corruption or malpractice. How? Fitwatch is launching a competition which will give a copy of the award-winning to the winner of each of three different categories: 1. Scary for the most shocking bit of police abuse recorded. Dixon of Dock Green it ain't! 2. Funny for the most piss-yourself classic copper moment. 3. 'Criticism' of Israel - or racism?

18-02-2009 10:56

Being anti-Israel is not always anti-Semitic. However Howard Jacobson argues today in 'The Independent', to see 'criticism' of Israel for what it really is. Is the 'European disease' really making a return in Britain today or is this just paranoia?

The True Face of alQaeda in Iraq

18-02-2009 01:46

The Terrorist Organization known as “alQaeda” has not mainly attacked oppressors or westerners, at least, not in Iraq.
