The worst enemy of knowledge is not ignorance but the illusion of knowledge.

06-03-2009 20:14

"This is a crisis", is the most uttered sentence during these last months. Yes, this is indeed a crisis. An economic crisis throughout society. But this crisis is also social, cultural and environmental, in one word: a general or structural crisis. If the economic and financial systems’ collapse is used as an excuse to accelerate the commoditation of our lives, goods and public services, responsible for even more precarious working conditions, we won't bite.

What's Really Happening In Darfur?: An Interview with Mahmood Mamdani

06-03-2009 16:44

The picture of the conflict in Darfur as "Arab-on-black" or even "black on black" genocide tells more about the U.S. than it does about Darfur, Sudan, or Africa. It is a false picture, brought to us by the corporate U.S. media to justify one of Uncle Sam's (maybe even Uncle Barack's) oil and resource wars in Sudan. After all, Sudanese oil IS flowiing to China through Chinese companies, not Western ones, and that will not be tolerated.

The Greening of Peter Mandelson

06-03-2009 12:17

Green custard was this morning thrown in the face of the Labour governments Business Secretary, Peter Mandelson by Plane Stupid activist Leila Deen. The former Northern Ireland Secretary was accosted moments after stepping out of his limo to attend a so-called 'low-carbon' summit in London. In full view of the assembled TV cameras he got a face full of custard and hurried inside. Leila then explained to the cameras that the action had been over Mandelsons unelected and undemocratic role in granting permission for Heathrows third runway on behalf of the business community.

"Quantitive Easing" - The Zimbabwe Solution

06-03-2009 12:11

Run out of money? Just print some more! "Quantitive easing" is scarcely new, even if now done electronically rather than with ink and paper. In current economic circumstances the obvious economic effect - inflation - is likely to be muted. I have never seen deflation before and few alive in the UK have. Stagflation, yes. Enough quantitive easing and we can eventually get back to stagflation. Meantime, thanks to Tony Blair and Gordon Brown for bringing us a new experience.
