Cheney’s trip to Japan and Australia: the preparation for new war crimes

21-02-2007 20:36

War Crimes
Cheney’s talks with political leaders in Japan and Australia constitute gatherings of what can only be described as an international criminal cabal. Behind the backs of ordinary people, sordid deals will be done to escalate the criminal violence emanating from Washington. In exchange for ongoing US support, Abe and Howard will be expected, at the very least, to echo US lies and fabrications about Tehran in the UN and other forums, as they did in relation to Iraq, thus providing a veneer of international support for further Bush administration war crimes.

Sefton Libraries are "non-essential"? Or are they?

21-02-2007 19:07

'The bulk' of council services in Sefton - including libraries, childrens' and social services - could soon be opened-up to profiteering, according to an article in today's Daily Post. Another alternative being presented is that "non-essential" services such as libraries (apparently) should close. You see, there just isn't enough dosh to go round.

Don't blame immigrants for bad use of English

21-02-2007 16:25

We are told that ‘multiculturalism has failed’, but not what multiculturalism is. Multicultural Britain isn’t a policy, it’s a fact. And now, apparently translating material into different languages, the purpose of which was to help people take part (integrate!) in society (attend evening classes for example or seek refuge from domestic violence) has suddently become a barrier to ‘integration’.

Forty-nine locals vow to stand in front of chainsaws to prevent loss of trees

21-02-2007 16:19

HEREFORD GREEN PARTY PRESS RELEASE:

Forty-nine locals vow to stand in front of chainsaws to prevent loss of Meadow trees.

A capacity crowd of nearly 300 people filled two floors of Hereford's Watershed building last night, to hear a coalition of groups talk about the Environment Agency's poorly-designed flood defence scheme for the City. Attendees expressed support for the provision of effective flood defences - but also concern over the Council's lack of vision and leadership in passing the current scheme by which established trees on Bishop's Meadow will be needlessly cut down. Green Party prospective Council candidate Martin Wyness asked people if they would be willing to stand under the affected trees, thereby making it impossible for workers to fell them. Forty-nine people expressed a commitment to stand in the way of the chainsaws in order to protect Hereford's wonderful cultural and natural heritage.

BBC reports on US military plans to strike Iran

21-02-2007 12:03

Despite its menacing naval build up in the Persian Gulf, the US has repeatedly denied any plans for war against Iran. Last Thursday Defence Secretary Robert Gates brazenly told a Pentagon press conference: “For the umpteenth time, we are not looking for an excuse to go to war with Iran. We are not planning a war with Iran.” The statement is another of the Bush administration’s lies.

Depleted Uranium: Pernicious Killer Keeps on Killing

21-02-2007 11:35

DU-Baby06.jpg
I live a few miles from an ATK (Alliant Tech) plant that produces depleted uranium (DU) tank shells for the military. Tank shells destroy and kill, and they, along with all military hardware, are a constant reminder of our failure as a civilization. But DU weapons and tank shells are only two of many items that raise questions that even our violence prone society needs to address. Since shortly after Gulf War I, soldiers and civilians have been questioning the safety of these weapons which are made of radioactive material. The more questions raised, the more the military-industrial complex has hauled out studies showing the safety of DU munitions. One CEO called DU the "skim milk" of uranium in an article penned for my local paper. An Air Force officer is even stalking the internet, trying to intimidate anyone who suggests DU is anything but benign.

Putin and the Geopolitics of the New Cold War

21-02-2007 11:26

Or, what happens when Cowboys don’t shoot straight like they used to…

The frank words of Russia’s President Vladimir Putin to the assembled participants of the annual Munich Wehrkunde security conference have unleashed a storm of self-righteous protest from Western media and politicians. A visitor from another planet might have the impression that the Russian President had abruptly decided to launch a provocative confrontation policy with the West reminiscent of the 1943-1991 Cold War.
