Bahman Ghobadi's award-winning film Turtles Can Fly follows the lives and relationships of a group of Kurdish orphans on the eve of the invasion of Iraq.The resourceful 13-year old Soran is nick-named Satellite for his ability to mobilise his child gang in the acquisition and installation of the satellite dishes that the villagers hope will relay news of the down-fall of Sadam. He is moved and stirred by the arrival of the beautiful but troubled young Agrin - but her personal history is a barrier between them. Ghobadi wrote the screenplay after living among villagers in this war-torn region - and his film observes their struggle for hope and survival with incredible empathy. The screening is introduced by Kurdish artist Houri Ghamian.
