Britain’s Secret Post-9/11 Torture Policy Revealed

05-08-2011 20:25

As the British government's toothless torture inquiry is abandoned by ten NGOs and lawyers for the former Guantánamo prisoners, who have long recognised that it was nothing more than a whitewash, but have now given up on even trying to engage with it, politicians n the Tory-led coalition government are not the only ones feeling the heat. Yesterday, in a world exclusive, the Guardian's Ian Cobain exposed a top secret document, entitled, "Agency policy on liaison with overseas security and intelligence services in relation to detainees who may be subject to mistreatment," which "reveal[ed] how MI6 and MI5 officers were allowed to extract information from prisoners being illegally tortured overseas."

Solidarity demo at the deadly Colnbrook immigration prison

05-08-2011 17:45

protesters arrive at Colnbrook (right) and Harmondsworth (left) with noise
Anti-detention campaigners today held a small, but noisy, protest at Colnbrook immigration prison, near Heathrow airport, where two migrant prisoners apparently killed themselves in less than a month. With a megaphone, whistles, a vuvuzela and pots and pans, they made themselves heard to the migrants locked up in Colnbrook, as well as in the adjacent Harmondsworth. Detainees shouted back 'freedom, freedom' and other angry, desperate slogans.

Social Tensions Near Boiling Point In Chile

05-08-2011 17:29

Copper mining is a huge part of the Chilean economy
It is a year to the day since thirty-three miners became trapped down a notoriously dangerous privatised mine in Copiapo, Chile, when a gas explosion produced a massive collapse. They were finally freed after seventy days underground, provoking joyous celebration around the globe. Twelve months on, they remain mired in poverty, while their brother miners in Chile's biggest mine fight for livable levels of pay, and thousands of students fight for cheaper and better state education.

SchNEWS: From Cradle To Graves: As The West Causes More Problems Than Droughts

05-08-2011 08:51

East Africa is currently experiencing one of the worst famines in recent history, with most of Somalia and large parts of Ethiopia experiencing severe food shortages. The west has been quick to offer the solution – more aid, more trade and flying in David Cameron (although he left early to try and save his job back home). This approach of aid, trade and sending rich white men to point at the locals has been the standard response to African disasters for the past 25 years and yet little progress seems to have been made.

It is true that the region is in the midst of an extreme drought and as a result pasture is parched and water sources for livestock have dried up. Unfortunately this means that if you bought an Ethiopian farmer a goat for Christmas, it’s probably already dead. However, this famine was far from unavoidable. Whether or not the drought itself can be blamed on human activity is debatable, yet the impact of western “foreign policy objectives” is far clearer and, conversely, much less reported.

For more information, and to check the dates of activity days, keep up to date at here: http://dalefarm.wordpress.?com/activity

Dale Farm is about 40 minutes from London Liverpool Station by Train, you can find directions and maps on the website here: http://dalefarm.wordpress.?com/contact/. To arrange a lift from Wickford Station, call 07757533380, 07888699256, 07583621312 or email dalefarm@btinternet.com

2. Callout for Workshops and Skillsharers

http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=194868883902698

We still have workshop space available, and are looking for anything from Civil Disobedience training, to Traveller history.  If you have some skills you'd like to contribute, or would like to suggest someone who can put on a workshop, please email savedalefarm@gmail.com with the details.

3. Help Organise with us!

As we get closer to the expiration of the notice of eviction (August 31st) we will need more help with our organising efforts.  If you'd like to support Dale Farm with your skills, please email us at savedalefarm@gmail.com, and let us know what sort of things you'd like to help with, and what gaps you think you can fill.  We need everything from practical site skills, to media work, to networking skills, to people with large vehicles and the ability to dig tunnels!

4. New postcard

We have a new postcard now that notice of eviction has been delivered http://dalefarm.files.wordpress.com/2011/08/dale-farm-flier-hi-res-august.pdf

Reclaim the Fields South West Gathering in Bristol

The first gathering for Reclaim the Fields South West will be happening on the weekend of the 6th -7th August in Bristol
featured image

The first gathering for Reclaim the Fields South West will be happening on the weekend of the 6th -7th August in Bristol.

The gathering will take place at The Factory, a squatted space and social centre at 2-8 Cave Street, St Pauls, Bristol (http://freefactory.wordpress.com). Food and accommodation is available.

Reclaim the Fields is a constellation of people and collective projects willing to go back to the land and reassume the control over food production. We are determined to create alternatives to capitalism through cooperative, collective, autonomous, real needs oriented small scale production and initiatives, putting theory into practice and linking local practical action with global political struggles. For more info see: http://www.reclaimthefields.org/

Confirmed workshops include how to access land, liberation permaculture, women and food production, Community Supported Agriculture structures and manifestos for community ownership. Visits to local growing projects will also take place.

There will be opportunities to meet, network and discuss "Are we ready to step up and take control of food production?"and how do we make this happen in the South West.

Help is still needed before and during the weekend. For more information and to get involved please email: frankynecklace@yahoo.co.uk
