It was probably less the (non-existent) threat of violence by protesters than the massively over-hyped announcements by the police and the mainstream media about Mayday riots that caused many shop owners on Oxford Street to board up their shops. At least half the shops on Oxford Street were boarded up.

The heavy-handed approach by police on Mayday made people more and more angry as the day went on. Several times during the day, the police had surrounded peaceful protesters and had prevented them from leaving for up to 7 hours, they repeatedly baton-charged crowds, and the Oxford Circus area looked like a militarised zone.

While tousands of peaceful protesters were surrounded by riot police in Oxford Circus and prevented from leaving for 7 hours, another two thousand people were moving around Oxford Circus, trying to help those inside, moving off on spontanous demonstrations, or just celebrating Mayday.

No, police were not ordered to guard the BBC from violent anarchists... They were in fact getting ready to surround peaceful protesters. The ITV camera team in the back repeatedly told them where to move and which position to take -- in order to get the right camera shots.

From Elephant and Castle, the crowd moved off to join other groups in central London. They arrived at the river where police had blocked Westminster and Lambeth bridge. Despite outnumbering police by almost ten times, the crowd decided not to break through the police line, showing their clear commitment to non-violent protest.

After almost 2 hours of party at Elephant and Castle, the crowd moved off the square to join other groups in central London. Police tried to prevent them from moving north, blocking all the major roads going north. However, the crowd found smaller side streets which finally led them towards the river.
