'Explosion of class anger' as protests against the Tory-imposed bedroom tax hit Bootle in Liverpool; protests planned in Nottingham on 16th March.
http://infantile-disorder.blogspot.co.uk/2013/02/explosion-of-class-anger-at-bootle.html To summarise Infantile Disorder, hundreds of people rose up in Liverpool this week to protest the bedroom tax, to be imposed next month. The protests were organised by a grassroots movement called Stand Up in Bootle, which has generated huge amounts of support in recent weeks. Protests look set to take place in Nottingham in two weeks, on Saturday 16th March at the Brian Clough statue, 2pm. There seems to be a facebook page for further info, but obviously be wary of joining any sort of facebook group etc as it's so easy to monitor!!: https://www.facebook.com/events/613425092006763/ The tax means that tenants of working age who are deemed to have a spare room, will have their benefits cut. For a full list of those who will be affected see: http://www.housing.org.uk/policy/welfare_reform/%E2%80%98under-occupation%E2%80%99_penalty.aspx As the list makes clear, as well as being one of the more overt attacks of class-aggression from the government (which is saying something!), the tax looks set to disproportionately impact upon vulnerable tenants (the Scottish Daily Record, for instance, suggests that 8/10 people who look set to be affected by the tax are disabled). Separated parents will also face difficulties if they currently share childcare, with one parent being designated as 'main' carer making the other parent face the tax (leading to welfare minister Lord Freud telling a father of three that his children should 'share the sofa' when they stay with him!). A proposed mansion tax, of course, is vehemently being opposed by the Conservatives.
