Gulf oil spill threatens economic, environmental catastrophe

30-04-2010 14:52

"According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, the Deepwater Horizon oil rig lacked a device called an acoustic switch that could have shut off the flow of oil. The remote controlled device sends acoustic impulses through the water that can trigger an underwater valve to shut down the well.

All offshore rigs have one main switch to shut off the flow of oil by closing a valve located on the ocean floor. There is also supposed to be a backup, a so-called “dead man,” that will shut down the well in the event of a catastrophe on the rig. Apparently neither of these devices worked on the Deepwater Horizon rig. The crewmembers who would have been closest to the shutoff switch are among those missing and presumed dead.

With an acoustic trigger a crew can shut down a well even if the rig is damaged or evacuated. However, BP, which reported profits of $5.598 billion for the first quarter of 2010, vigorously resisted changes to US regulations that would have required acoustic triggers on deep sea rigs, citing effectiveness and costs, about $500,000 per unit. Compliant US regulators agreed, saying other backup plans were sufficient. They called the acoustic triggers unreliable and prone to causing unnecessary shutdowns."

Nottingham Free School's May Day Discussion

30-04-2010 09:39

With Mayday coming soon the Nottingham Free School decided to arrange an open discussion on some of the issues surrounding the day. This discussion took place at the Sumac last Sunday night and is scheduled to be the first in a series which will take place on the final Sunday of each month. The hope is to create a regular space in which we can learn collectively and share our ideas and understandings of issues which strike us to have a particular relevancy. On Sunday we hoped to discuss the nature of class struggle today, as well as the different forms that resistance to capitalism can take, and this was in many ways a success.

'Supreme Master' cult promote breatharianism

30-04-2010 01:07

The 'Supreme Master' cult have come to prominence in the UK vegan scene in recent years. The bleach blonde 'enlightened' cult leader 'Supreme Master Ching Hai' has an estimated 20,000 followers world wide mostly in Taiwan and other parts of South East Asia but increasingly in Europe and the US. They are prominent in the UK at animal rights and vegan events and have opened two restaurants in London (Peking Palace and Loving Hut). They have a tv channel on Sky tv (in the UK) which mostly features programmes with the repetitive messages on the virtues of the 'Supreme Master' and her magical mediation method, promoting veganism/health and the environment.

Harmless enough? Yes, but the cult has taken a sinister turn recently, promoting through their programmes the idea of 'breatharianism'. The untrue idea that a person can live without food or water.

Solidarity picket for Serbian anarchists report

29-04-2010 22:25

Picket report...

On the 23rd April 2010, members of the North and South London locals of the Solidarity Federation and their supporters picketed the London offices of Jat Airways in central London. Hundreds of leaflets were distributed to people visiting the offices as well as passing by, informing them of the situation of the six anarchists currently awaiting trial on completely fabricated charges. Supporters also carried placards with slogans such as "Belgrade Six Innocent" and "Free ASI union activists".

After distributing the leaflets, a letter was presented to the Serbian embassy informing them of the picket and that if the injustice continues there will be more protests, in London and abroad, to bring more publicity to the active political repression going on in Serbia.

We would like to extend our solidarity to the six currently on trial, their friends and families and our sister-group, the ASI, whom the Serbian state is clearly attacking for its attempts at building a libertarian and internationalist working class movement in Serbia.
