New immigration prison to open at Gatwick this spring
30-01-2009 00:37
The new immigration detention centre at Gatwick airport will not be opened until the spring, Corporate Watch has learned. The official opening had been scheduled for February this year but has been delayed for undisclosed reasons. The purpose-built high-security prison, named Brook House, is based on the 'successful' design of Colnbrook detention centre at Heathrow airport. The new detention centre will be run by Global Solution Ltd (GSL), which is now owned by G4S, and will hold up to 426 male and female detainees.

Corporate Watch: Direct Action Against Israel – Part 1
30-01-2009 00:32
On the second big Gaza solidarity march in London on 10th January, angry protesters smashed the front of a Starbucks store on Kensington High St, near the Israeli embassy, while other activists occupied the Ahava beauty shop in central London. Other actions in protest at the Israeli massacre in Gaza this month have included occupying the offices of the British Israel Communications and Research Centre (BICOM) in central London, 'decommissioning' the ITT/EDO arms factory in Brighton and university occupations across the country calling for divestment. So, who are these companies and why are they being targeted by protesters and campaigners? Corporate Watch takes a detailed look.
'Crisis' General Strike in France, Paris some rioting.
30-01-2009 00:09
PARIS (AFP) — More than a million French workers took to the streets Thursday to voice anger and fear of job losses during a one-day strike over President Nicolas Sarkozy's handling of the economic crisis. Billed as a "Black Thursday," the nationwide day of action caused less transport disruption than expected but the strike was well supported, with a quarter of France's five million public sector workers downing tools.World Day for Lab Animals March - London

Deborah Orr: A Tribute to the Propaganda Box
29-01-2009 23:14
Is there anyone left out there who hasn't been sucked into TV Land – British (or American) style – who can still attest to life devoid of the culturally (politically) requisite 3.75 hours of daily TV watching, or 26.25 hours per week? It's worth noting that Deborah Orr tells us within her below article, published in today's Independent newspaper, that these figures only include broadcast television, not watching DVDs, films in cinemas, YouTube or other internet-broadcast content.Pfizer Acquires Wyeth & Double Amount of Demos

Gaza in the Heart of Jaffa
29-01-2009 22:36
Saturday, Jan 31st, at 15:00, in Gan Hashnaim (Yefet st. corner of Dr. Erlich)On Saturday, January 31st 2009, at 15:00, we will hold a protest event in Gan Hashnaim (Yefet st. corner of Dr. Erlich), with projections of testimonies from Gaza, art installations and performances.
This park has been the stage, during the war, upon which protest voices of Jews and Arabs could be heard. In the past, taxis from Gaza could reach this park, symbolizing the strong tie that exists between Gaza and Jaffa. 75% of Gaza's population is composed of refugees that have been expelled from their homes and lands in 1948, among which thousands of Jaffa residents.
In this event we ask to return the park its name – Gaza Park – in remembrance to the victims of the aggression, and in the name of a joint future.
