Intruders at the Investment Banking Awards

11-10-2012 20:55

The Investment Banking Awards are the Oscars of the financial world. Dished out for so-called 'innovation', some of the world's richest bankers gather together to congratulate each other on devising ever more creative ways to make obscene sums of money. See the film of the awards.

One of 2012's most profitable scams was the bankers' 'innovative' approach to a key interest rate called LIBOR. Virtually every bank at the event was involved in illegally colluding to rig LIBOR, ensuring that they would always be the winners in the multi-million pound bets they were making on the markets.

When we noticed that this money-spinner had been overlooked in the ceremony, we decided to show up and make sure the LIBOR-riggers got the recognition they deserve.

Sustainable accreditation considered for shark finning

11-10-2012 19:02

Fishermen catch sharks for their fins. Photo by flickr.com/bibblojonas
In what has already been branded a highly controversial move, Western Australia's Fisheries Minister Norman Moore has announced he is seeking 'sustainable' certification for shark fins which regional fishermen wish to export to Asia. The high demand for the prized fins in countries like China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Korea is pushing shark species towards the brink of extinction as ever increasing numbers of sharks are primarly killed for their fins. Since a recent visit to China by an official Australian trade delegation, the Fisheries Minister and his department have commissioned the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) to analyse the possibilities of giving the Western Australia's shark finning practices a 'green' stamp of approval.

The suffering of the people of Pakistan is largely unknown in the West. A veil of silence has been carefully drawn over the number of people killed every day by American drones and Taliban murders. Bristol squatters attempt 'proportionality' defence

11-10-2012 11:25

We were in court today for possession of our posh Clifton squat. We attempted to buy more time arguing possession forthwith would be disproportionate under Article 8 of the Human Rights Act 1998.

We didn't succeed and possession was awarded forthwith but it wasn't entirely hopeless and could be something other squatters might try.

Boston anti-immigration protest back on

10-10-2012 08:55

Dean Everitt and his badly-named Boston Protest March fb group are planning to hold a static demonstration against immigration in a month’s time. The demonstration will take place on 18th November outside the Herbert Ingram Memorial. Although Everitt says “THIS IS NOT A RACE ISSUE AND RACISIM WONT BE TOLLERATED” it’s hard to imagine the virulently anti-East European sentiment of those who support the group, including activists from a number of far right groups, will pay much attention.

The demo has been postponed since July whilst the group awaited the publication of a report by Boston Borough Council into the local impact of immigration. The report, which is now released, has been deemed unsatisfactory by Everitt and co.

Everitt originally cancelled a march which was intended to take place in 2011 because he claimed he was worried about it being hijacked by the far right. He has obviously changed his mind because he has invited a number of prominent fascists and far right organisers to his new demo, including Bill Baker, leader of the New Patriot Alliance, Simon Bennett from the British Freedom leadership and a number of BNP and EDL activists.

The news hasn’t gone down well with the readers of the Boston Standard though. “Thought Mr Everitt had been out the news for a while (which was actually quite nice!)” says Gooner 5271. “YAWN!!!!!!!!!!!! Has this not died already? When will Everitt learn that his mob will solve and change nothing!” says YBForever. “When will this idiot realise that not everybody in this town has got the narrow minded views as him!!!! seriously grow up!!!” says Another fed up local. “It will achieve nothing. This is a Westminster issue not a local one… This will simply increase tensions and cause trouble on the day” says Skelsang. There wasn’t a single positive comment on the article. Not exactly resounding local support.

If Everitt really wants to drag in a bunch of racist morons from out of town to totally discredit his already sinking ship of a protest movement, he should go ahead. But maybe he hasn’t thought this one through.
