Threat of US recession panics global stock markets

22-01-2008 07:34

Stock prices plummeted worldwide Monday, amid heightened fears of a US recession. While over the course of last week US financial markets suffered the worst fall since 2002, with the Down Jones Industrial Average dropping by 5 percent, many Asian and European indices dropped by a similar amount in just one day. It was the biggest one-day fall in world stock markets since September 11, 2001. Industrial stocks fell together with financial, suggesting that the US credit crisis, hitherto confined mainly to the banking and mortgage sectors, is spilling over into the real economy worldwide.

CIA Supported Rightward Shift of Labour Party

22-01-2008 05:10

The British American Project received funds from the CIA to help what it saw as anti-Americanism within Europe. When you look at some of the people who were involved in the project on the list, it helps explain why they have appeared more like Tories than the Tories themselves. Also, what was Mandelson really up to when he was a member of socialist organizations in his youth?

Int'l Condemnation of Gaza Collective Punishment Grows

22-01-2008 02:12

Collective Punishment is a War Crime.

This has little to do with rockets, except that when Israel first imposed Collective Punishment, in order to "suffocate Hamas", its own defence staff warned that it would provoke a violent response.

Israel is directly responsible for provoking the violence it now uses to justify aggression it planned long before Annapolis. Sadly, much of the media is so cowed that they're getting away with it.

In directing the failed coup attempt in Gaza, Israel is also responsible for the crisis which it now says it is "reacting to" ...

Israel's policy in Gaza: at least as evil as it is self-defeating

21-01-2008 23:09

Israel's policy towards the Gaza issue is at least as phenomenally stupid as it is evil. In fact, I consider it a perfect case study in Neocon short-term thinking.

Hamas will not back down from its highly successful strategy, and Fatah cannot sustain an overt collaboration with Israel in these circumstances. Time is running out, the situation in Gaza is beyond catastrophic and political pressure is mounting on Israel to stop treating Gaza like the biggest open air concentration camp in the world. This is why Hassan Nasrallah is quite correct when he warns that "Gaza has entered a danger circle" and that the Palestinians there "should take extreme caution": an invasion of Gaza is probably imminent.

Rearranging the Rocks on the Deck of the Titanic

21-01-2008 20:19

The FTSE 100 lost 5.5% today, if that happens for another twenty days there is no FTSE 100. The entire edifice of global capitalism has difficulties, meanwhile, the UK politicians and their media witter on about one failed building society.
Given the absence of any serious commentary on the situation here, please allow me to introduce you to 'Kunstler' of 'Long Emergency' fame. There is some 'told you so' shadenfraude to his view of the situation, you can follow his blog over time to see if things get less 'gleeful'. Thankyou.
