19-08-2000 22:05About 120 people gathered at Oakington Detention Centre today (19th August) as part of a Cambridge-wide campaign to highlight the plight and ill-treatment of refugees in the UK. People tied ribbons to the parimeter fence whilst playing instruments and sharing food. An organiser from 'CAGE' explained, "We want people inside the detention centre to know that people on the outside care".

All morning the police had cordoned off fields, blocked roads, and set up heavily staffed observation points at local roundabouts.
