Pangea Project sponsored by BNFL rules out Cumbria

Radiation Free Lakeland have just discovered a leaked 1999 promotional video largely sponsored  by BNFL which notes that areas of "high rainfall, permeable rocks and mountains"  would make the land too fiercely radioactive to sustain life if high level waste was dumped underground.

Following the failure of the UK plan for a nuclear waste dump in Cumbria in 1997, the Pangea project was put forward for a high level waste dump in Australia.   BNFL was the major backer.  The proposal was thrown out by Australian state and federal parliaments in 2000.

The Pangea Project no longer has a website but there is a leaked promotional video produced by the Partners -BNFL, Golder Associates and Swiss radioactive waste quango Nagra.

"There is a good degree of consensus worldwide by governments and scientists that geological disposal is the most viable option", the Pangea video claims.  But if there was any scientific and political consensus on the wisdom and safety of "geological disposal"  Yucca Mountain would now be a high level waste dump run by URS Washington on behalf of the American Dept of Energy.  Instead URS Washington has scuttled out of America and set up shop in Cumbria hoping that we are a softer touch this time round.

So-called "geological disposal" - the equivalent of hundreds of Blackpool Towers underground filled with the world's high level wastes is an out-of-sight, out-of-mind confidence trick.

This official short video outlines the need for "large flat, dry, remote areas" and rules out the idea of putting nuclear waste in areas where there is any of the following: "high rainfall, permeable rocks, and mountains which would drive the water flow"  and make the land too fiercely radioactive to sustain life.

(CAUTION: the YouTube video comments reflect the strength of feeling in Australia against the proposal to dump the world's nuclear waste in a

remote, flat, dry, large, expanse of land)
