Flyer for BarnCamp 2011 10-12 June more info at hacktivista.net/barncamp

Brought to you by HacktionLab, BarnCamp 2011 will be three days of workshops on topics ranging from renewable energy to foraging for food to citizen journalism to using free software for activism, up to three nights of camping, open space sessions, evening entertainment and great food on a beautiful farm co-op high in the Wye Valley.

2011 will mark the forth BarnCamp convergence at Highbury Farm in the Wye Valley (Wales) where people interested and/or working in the areas of alternative media, renewable energy, on-line video distribution, free software and any other form of activism that utilises technology come together to share skills and discuss experiences. Based on feedback from the previous years, we are deliberately continuing to keep this year's camp less geeky than the previous years by having a more open range of workshops and open space sessions, but we are also inserting an extra day to allow for more, longer workshops - some of which might be geeky! Check-out what we got up to in 2008 2009 and 2010.

Costing just £30 in advance, BarnCamp takes place on the 10, 11 and 12 June this year, so for full effect best to turn up on Thursday 9th.

March to save the NHS

17-05-2011 23:55

Following a call to "march for the NHS" around 1500 demonstrated on Tuesday 17th from Euston to Whitehall to protest the planned cuts for the NHS. The NHS bill currently pushed through by the Government will ultimatelly allow neoliberal capitalist thinking and its belief in the markets to dictate the type of services the NHS will provide, causing irreparable damage to it.

See photos: 1 | 2 | 3

This is the second demonstration that has taken place in London in the last few months against the planned privatisation of the NHS. On the 9th of March a 'Day X for the NHS' saw over 500 people demonstrating from the Royal London Hospital to St Bartholomew's Hospital, the oldest hospital in the country [See photos here and here] On that evening, as the march was passing the City, unrepentant Deutsche Bank workers waved money from the windows whilst heckling the demosntarionss with 'get a job'. See photo.

Rainbow Flag flies over Nttm Castle on IDAHO Day

17-05-2011 20:55

Today is International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO)

The object is to make a statement to demand improvements for the quality of life for all LGBT people.

The Rainbow Flag flew from the pole at Nottingham Castle to celebrate the cultural diversity in Nottingham and the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT) community.

Richard Townsley, Nottingham Pride's Chairman, said: "'IDAHO day is an international day against homophopia and Nottinghamshire Pride is delighted to be working with Nottingham City Council to promote this day. We are proud to be able to fly the rainbow flag which is the symbol of the LGBT community, over the city of Nottingham, from the Castle site."

"This is the most prominent flag pole in the whole of Nottinghamshire, it can be seen by many thousands of people. I hope that they will enjoy seeing our rainbow flying over the city"

The flag was produced by David Gibson, a student aged 23, who is in his first year studying costume design at Nottingham Trent University.

The Lord Mayor, Councillor Brian Grocock, attended the flag raising ceremony this morning said: "Flying the rainbow flag in Nottingham is a visible sign of our dedication to supporting and celebrating the LGBT community on this important day."

The City Council, Notts Fire and Rescue Service  and many collages and universities in the city had supported the day by flying the rainbow flag from prominent locations

...... on the other hand ...... NottS County Council has defended its decision NOT to fly the rainbow flag to celebrate IDAHO Day  ... http://bit.ly/iV23uk

Inaccessible website

17-05-2011 16:33

I was told that I could read hidden comments on the articles by putting ?c=all on the end of an address.

Unfortunately, I am quite visually impaired, so it is very difficult to read the text through the grey hash pattern that you have.

Is there anyway to make this more accessible with people with visual impairment difficulties?

Sorry for posting on here, I wasn't sure where to do this.
Thanks for your help
