A New Oil Rush Endangers the Gulf of Mexico and the Planet
22-05-2010 02:46
"In the process, however, most of our easily accessible onshore oil and gas reservoirs have been depleted, leaving only less accessible reserves in offshore areas, Alaska, and the melting Arctic. To ensure a continued supply of hydrocarbons -- and the continued prosperity of the giant energy companies -- successive administrations have promoted the exploitation of these extreme energy options with a striking disregard for the resulting dangers. By their very nature, such efforts involve an ever increasing risk of human and environmental catastrophe -- something that has been far too little acknowledged."PHILIPPINES: Sabotaging the path to the strategic stalemate

Potential health ‘legacy’ of CG2014 unproven

Healthy legacy?
A recently published report by Gerry McCartney et al in the British Medical Journal (BMJ 2010; 340: c2369) has cast serious doubt on the potential health benefit ‘legacy’ of the Commonwealth Games 2014.
Their report analysed fifty-four studies assessing the health and socioeconomic impacts of major multi-sport events on the host population between 1978 and 2008.
Their conclusion:
“Our review found insufficient evidence to confirm or refute expectations about the health or socioeconomic benefits for the host population of previous major multi-sport events. Benefits from future events—such as the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games in London or the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow—cannot be expected to occur automatically”.
“There is a lack of evidence on the impacts of major multi-sport events on the host population, and until decision makers include robust, long term evaluations as part of their design and implementation of events, it is unclear how the costs can be justified in terms of host population benefits”.
The Scottish Government commissioned the report, but when they saw that the results didn’t conform to the outcome they wanted, they refused to publish or own it. You can read the full text below and make up your mind about the findings:

FOR SELF-ORGANISATION & ANTI-CAPITALIST RESISTANCEGlasgow University Students in Solidarity with Lecturers whose Jobs are Threatened
21-05-2010 17:25
Glasgow University lecturers have been threatened with forced redundancies. Over 80 jobs are at risk. This is despite the university's budget being very healthy, so this cost-cutting exercise is completely unnecessary. Students demonstrated in support of the staff on Thursday 20th May and to protest that the education cuts will affect their studies. A petition was handed into the principal and it was agreed to have talks early in June.
See http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEkf5n1AcU4 for the march and a few speeches including one by staff.

Scottish Borders celebrates World Environment Day
The Green Fork
A new group, “The Green Fork –Scottish Borders”, focusing on healthy, low-carbon food will be launched with a free talk and workshop on World Environment Day, Saturday 5th June at the Tweedbank Community Centre, Tweedbank from 12noon-2pm. There will be free compassionate-living guides focusing on ethical and compassionate living in Tweedbank and lots more free literature to be taken away!
The event is designed to introduce everyone to a more ethical lifestyle, with free food and tips on how to make simple and practical changes that can have a real impact on your own health and the health of the environment. There will be an emphasis on local and community based initiatives that everyone who is interested in reducing their carbon footprint by eating healthily and locally can get involved with. Ongoing support will be offered through a local “meetup” group.
Whilst many people are now concerned about climate change and choose energy efficient light bulbs, drive hybrid cars and install solar panels, etc we ignore a simple step we can take every day, changing our food habits. A key aim of the event is to raise awareness of the disastrous effect of a meat-based diet on the climate and calls on the Scottish Government to take immediate steps to recognize and reduce the impact of the livestock industry on our environment.
Donna Hanson, co-ordinator of the campaign in the Borders, said, ‘According to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Agency (FAO), the livestock and meat industry accounts for 18% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions. That is more than comes from the world’s entire transportation sector. So a change in our eating habits can make a contribution to necessary reductions of emissions. A plant-based, wholefood diet is the single most effective step anyone can take to reduce animal suffering, improve your health and protect the planet. Such a diet has been scientifically shown to reduce, and in some cases even reverse, diseases like diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, cancer, obesity and other auto-immune diseases And the food is wonderful, too! What other diet can offer so much?”
Please e-mail info@greenfork.org.uk to book a place

Synthetic Telepathy - The Article Wikipedia Did Not Want You To Read

The following article is an entry that appeared on Wikipedia. Within the last 24 hours a major "edit war" broke out and it appeared, at least to me, that the information was being suppressed. The article goes into depth about a field of espionage that employs a technology known as "silent sound" or "Synthetic telepathy". If you're interested in high tech espionage, this makes for a very good read.Greece: Protest against transphobia and homophobia

Calling All Rebels Another Hunger Strike In Ireland
21-05-2010 02:57
Today, a selfless, dedicated and uncompromising Irish Republican political prisoner, Liam Hannaway, lies unbowed in a cold and unforgiving British gaol cell, as he enters his 35th day on Hunger Strike whilst being incarcerated at Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland’s pleasure at Maghaberry Gaol, located in occupied Irish territory that is known as the State of Northern Ireland. During the recent history of Ireland’s quest for ‘Unity’, this ultimate act of Irish Republican defiance against Britain’s colonial Prison regime in the North has already been presided over by this current British monarch and by a Conservative government in Westminster! – The 1981 Hunger Strike- Lest We Forget!Dialect - Bullingdon Club thug/toffs in Britain's new government
