Oxford World Development Movement (WDM) hosted a talk on Wednesday 22nd November at the Town Hall entitled, 'The World Bank and International Monetary Fund: Reform or Abolition?' Turn-out was really good and people heard three top speakers talk on the future of the World Bank and IMF: Dr. Stephen Hurt, Senior Lecturer in International Relations at Oxford Brookes, Patrick Watt, Senior Policy Officer at ActionAid, and Peter Hardstaff, Head of Policy at WDM.

Foreboding has hit the ranks of private equity firms; try as they might to unload vast amounts of funds (monetary value is inextricably linked to the movement of those funds) they have been unable to spend/invest at a rate that would sustain value let alone increase real profits! The ‘healthy figures’ reflecting increased acquisitions/investments are on paper only – it ‘looks good’ at the moment!

The strange disappearance of CIA's prisoners

On 20 Nov 2006, The New Statesman led a cover story by Stephen Grey, the author of "Ghost Plane: the inside story of the CIA's secret rendition programme". Under the title "Missing Presumed Tortured", the article wondered whatever happened to the 7,000 or so prisoners captured in America's 'war on terror', when just 700 of them ended up in Guantanamo Bay. "Between extraordinary rendition to foreign jails and disappearance into the CIA's 'black sites'," Grey asks, "what happened to the rest?"
