Save ESOL! March and Rally 3rd March 2007

On Saturday 3rd March 2007 Tyneside Community Action for Refugees (TCAR) joined with Newcastle College Student Union and ESOL staff and students to organise a march and rally against the Labour government's proposed cuts to funding for ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages). Under the proposed changes, from September 2007 asylum seekers will be totally excluded from English classes, and other will be expected to pay, effectively excluding many low paid migrant workers.

Interview with Moazzam Begg

Moazzam Begg

British national Moazzam Begg was a prisoner of the United States for over three years, first at Bagram and Kandahar in Afghanistan, and then at Guantanamo Bay. He was also one of the first six men designated as eligible to be tried by military commissions. He was abruptly released two years ago, and the British authorities cleared him of any involvement in terrorism related activities within hours. He lives with his family in Birmingham, England, and is currently the spokesperson for the activist website Cage Prisoners. Mr. Begg is the author of “Enemy Combatant: My Imprisonment at Guantanamo, Bagram and Kandahar”. On March 1, 2007, I had the privilege of interviewing Mr. Begg by telephone.

International Women's Day in Liverpool

We are going to have a protest outside George (Asda's clothing line) in Liverpool City Centre on Thursday for International Women's Day - since its mainly women workers who produce the cheap clothes for ASDA, Tesco & Primark. We'll meet at 4.30 outside George (or 4pm at the basement) and stay until around 6.30 (or closing time, if that is sooner).

Sheffielders are assisting the people of Bagh in Kashmir ,one of the most affected area with 60% still under the rubble to rebuild a girls college that was totally demolished and since then no education of any sort has been delivered.
The Lord Mayor kindly chose the Sheffield Bagh Girls College as one of her 3 charities.The Kashmir Bazaar will take place on 23rd March in the Town Hall between 10 and 4 to help raise further monies.
