Video of Bikes Alive protest.

10-01-2012 16:55

Pedestrians on foot and people in wheelchairs joined with cyclists to protest against the polices of Transport for London, which prioritises motor vehicles over vulnerable road users. This could become a regular event.

Bikes Alive say, "Transport for London (TfL) is quite clear that it is deliberately putting cyclists’ lives at risk (not only passively, but actively by designing dangerous “cycle superhighways”), in preference to re-balancing road usage to prioritise people over machines. TfL says that nothing must be done to slow down motor vehicles."

Guantánamo Prisoners Stage Peaceful Protest and Hunger Strike to mark 10 years

10-01-2012 14:34

Today, prisoners at Guantánamo will embark on a peaceful protest, involving sit-ins and hunger strikes, to protest about their continued detention, and the continued existence of the prison at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, three years after President Obama came to office promising to close it within a year, and to show their appreciation of the protests being mounted on their behalf by US citizens, who are gathering in Washington D.C. on Wednesday to stage a rally and march to urge the President to fulfill his broken promise.

Letter to General Practitioners

10-01-2012 12:55

Send letters to GP's asking for their views on the Health and Social Care Bill

LETTER TO GENERAL PRACTITIONERS

The more pressure that is put on personnel involved in changes in the National Health Service the more likely it is that we can obstruct the Government's privatization plan.  Please find below a model letter for patients who are concerned about the Government's proposed changes to the NHS.  We urge you to post or email this letter to the doctors at the general practice at which you are registered.  You may wish to alter the text to express your particular concerns.  Also please forward this letter on to other people who may wish to use it.  It would be useful if you would inform KOHSP of any responses you receive.

Dear Dr./Drs. ... .

I am very concerned about the changes to Primary Health Care that the Government is trying to bring about by means of its Health and Social Care Bill.

The Government intends that the provision of much health care will be brought about by means of Clinical Commissioning Groups purchasing appropriate services.  We have been led to believe that it will be general practitioners in CCG's who will actively choose the suppliers of services.  However, close scrutiny of the proposed legislation reveals that most GP's will not be deemed to be suitably qualified and experienced to make such decisions.  In practice it will be representatives of private health care companies who will effectively decide how the money will be spent.  As you are probably aware, the British Medical Association has expressed serious concerns about this and other aspects of the proposed changes to the NHS.

In general it seems to me that the Government's proposed changes to the NHS do not have the aim of creating a more effective health care service.  Rather the real aim is to provide opportunities for private companies to make profits.  Such a change could well result in a decline in standards of health care. There is some very useful briefing information on the website of Allyson Pollock - http://allysonpollock.co.uk and more campaign information on www.keepournhspublic.com

As one of your patients I would like to know what are your views on the Government's plans for change in the NHS.  I suggest a discussion of these matters at the next meeting of your patient participations group.

                                                                                     Yours sincerely,

                                                                                        (Signature)

What is "money"? Is it the same as "currency"? What about gold?

10-01-2012 09:52

What is money? Everyone talks about it, but what is it exactly? Why did we created it the first place? A lot of people seem to blame money for all the problems in the world, and yet "money makes the world go round".
In order to truly understand what is happening today, we must first explore how money came to be, and the purpose it serves.

'Spartacus' Report

10-01-2012 04:55

A new report has been released exposing the government's spin over it's attempts to 'reform' (i.e. cut) Disability Living Allowance.

This report is a comprehensive presentation of the most relevant evidence available on Disability Living Allowance (DLA) and the proposals to replace it with a new benefit, Personal Independence Payments (PIP). It gathers together existing information and analyses over 500 group responses to the Government's Response to Disability Living Allowance reform.

Unsurprisingly, the report finds that the government's consultation on the issue was flawed and failed to meet the Government's code of practice for consultations. Also, the fact that 74% of respondents were opposed to the plans (incuding Boris Johnson for pity's sake) seems to have been brushed aside.

You can read it via this link.

report & pics from tonight's 'bikes alive' protest

10-01-2012 00:55

'bikes alive' is a new direct action campaigning group to counter the lethargy of transport for london, and its prioritising of london traffic flow over the safety of pedestrians and cyclists. tonight saw the first of a series of direct action traffic calming gatherings at king's cross designed to pressure TfL into more urgent action over the deadly junction.

----

at the 6pm start numbers looked a little thin, with no more than a few dozen cyclists gathered on the corner of euston road and york way in front of king's cross station. they were observed by several police cyclists and a few others on foot.

numbers did gradually build up, and by about twenty past, the action began with probably a little over a hundred cyclists making their way up york way at a snail's pace, forming an effective blockade against the rush hour traffic.

they looped round and back via the scala before completely blocking the busy junction between euston and pentonville roads with york way.

here - next to the white ghost bicycle left as a memorial to 'deep' lee, the young cyclist who was the 16th cycle fatality of 2011 - they chanted slogans against boris, and reclaimed the streets. police began re-directing traffic up york way and round, and traffic tailed back along euston road a long way.

for the next half an hour, the cycle blockade, accompanied by quite a few people on foot, made slow progress back and forth along both sides of euston road outside the station. near the front of the procession were des kay, the bicycle activist who won landmark court battles against police attempts to restrict the monthly critical mass rides, and jenny jones, the green campaigner on the london assembly and the metropolitan police authority.

police response remained (i suspect partly because of jenny jones' presence) reasonably low key, although inspector mcdonald kept asking people to 'keep moving' and he was accompanied by an over-eager community support officer who liked shouting at and grabbing people in an offensive manner.

finally at just after 7pm, after holding the start of pentonville road for several minutes while traffic was once again directed up york way, cyclists agreed to leave en masse rather than dwindle in numbers, des kay recited one of his infamous cycle activist poems, and the cyclists went off into the night.

the plan is to hold regular, possibly weekly, blockades until TfL promise to act. check the www.bikesalive.wordpress.com site for details of next week's ride at king's cross.

Kurdish people protest killing civilians in Turkey

09-01-2012 20:55

Saturday 7 January 2012

Supporters of the Kurdish people gathered together in the Market Square.  Leafleting and listening to speeches.

They then marched across Nottingham to protest outside the BBC building in London Road.

They say that the coverage they get from the BBC on these issues is biased towards the Turkish goverment view of evnts.  They were interviewed by duty reporters there, when they asked for a more balanced coverage of their cause.

Eviction - Press Release: 9/1/12 from Occupy Lancaster!

09-01-2012 19:21

There are over 1 million empty properties in the UK, 350,000 of these have been vacant for over a year. Money is being spent on keeping these places empty with no benefit to communities and with negative devaluation of properties in the surrounding area. Criminalising squatting in the middle of a housing crisis, as the Con-Dem government plan to do, is only going to make matters worse.
