They refused instruction by embassy security to vacate the building reading aloud a letter of demands addressed to the Australian High Commissioner.

Early this morning a group of activists locked themselves to the gates of the EDO/ITT weapons factory in Brighton. SmashEDO press spokesperson Andrew Beckett said,'Once again EDO boss Paul Hills has been forced to angle grind his way through his own fence to get his workers back to their murderous production line. Today's action has been taken in protest against EDO/ITT's complicity in civilian deaths in the US' war of aggression in Afghanistan, and to show EDO that wherever in the world they profit from death and misery, we'll be here in Brighton to fight back'.

after their end of term party last week, it looks for all the world as though the students have gone home for christmas, as only around 100 turned up to the protest this evening outside the dept of business innovation and skills. but police weren't taking any chances and westminster looked like it was under siege
the protest, called by the 'education acitivist network' and supported by london region UCU, was called for a 3.30 start in trafalgar square, with a 4pm protest at the department of business, innovation and skills in victoria street.
i took a little look around and found several police vans near palace green, another half dozen outside westminster station, a few more round the back of the square, a dozen sitting in streets off whitehall, four more at the entrance to pall mall, and four parked up near the national gallery.
two teams of TSG stood around near the square, and many other officers and wardens strolled round the square, with another team near the christmas tree.
the protestors had set up a little tressle table and stood chatting and holding some banners . at best, they numbered twenty or so.
still, they set off down whitehall, and the warning went out among terrified police. one team of a dozen TSG officers were receiving a final briefing on parliament square, while another team hid round the corner towards the bridge.
as the students approached parliament, the hidden team pounced and stopped them from crossing the road. thankfully, they controlled their panic, and they kept their batons sheathed. the students then walked round the back of the square to their target in victoria street.
there, a larger group of some sixty people had already converged around their very own trestle table, and cheers of solidarity rang out.
while they worked out where they were going to stand, there was a brief attempt at a roadblock, but with so many restless police around, the protestors were quickly coaxed by TSG onto the pavement opposite the government department, and surrounded by police, their banners could hardly be seen through the sea of yellow tabards.
a FIT team filmed and photographed all the peaceful protestors from across the road, and then for good measure crossed over and filmed the journalists in front of the building.
two lone protestors held their ground right infront of the department and despite some threats were allowed to remain.
the FIT team and some other police spotters seemed to have found persons of interest, and suddenly two snatched arrests were made, with a half-hearted de-arrest attempt quickly swamped by TSG.
police refused to give any information about why the two people were arrested, or to which police station they were being taken. a couple of legal observers were trying to find if anyone knew the arrestees.
soon after, the crowd disbanded, and a small group marched off, towards a public meeting being held at kings college, and followed by several police on foot and several vanloads by road.
tomorrow sees the vote for student fee cuts in the house of lords, but it is unclear whether there will be a mass turnout of anyone other than police.
there has been a call to kettle scotland yard in solidarity with alfie meadows, the student who remains in hospital after being struck by a police baton and nearly losing his life. it's possible his ambulance driver saved his life by refusing to be turned away from chelsea and westminster hospital where a policy was in operation to only treat police.
the scotland yard kettle is called for 1pm tuesday

Ratcliffe Trial Day 14 – Jury Still Retired

10.00am and all back in court yet again.
Sitting in Nottingham Crown Court, His Honour Judge Teare reminded the jury that although the press was full over the weekend, of the progress [or lack of it], of the talks taking place in Cancún climate summit in Mexico, they were to discount all of it. He says the verdict they reach is to be on the evidence introduced here, during this trial.
Today was much of a re-run of friday. The jury retired at 10.22am. Then, at 12.33 PM the court reconvened to answer a further jury question concerning the burden of proof. As with all trials, the judge reiterated that it is the duty of the prosecution to make the jury sure that the defendants were unreasonable in their actions, rather than the duty of the defence to make the jury sure that they were reasonable.
In common with the defendants, a few of us hopped from one foot to the other, just hoping. Then, at 3.46PM this afternoon the jury came back into the court room, looking tired, and passed another note to the judge asking to go home for the day.
Before they left, the judge said that he would now accept a majority verdict – this means that he will accept a verdict that 10 or more jurors are agreed on.
Adding friday and today, the jury will have now had some 10 hours of deliberations.

On the BBC a 'terrorism expert' just linked the Swedish suicide bomber to Wikipedia, said this 'civil liberties government' tried to stop people thinking clearly about radicalisation, demanded a thorough inquiry into universities which he blamed for terrorism and the banning of middle-eastern students. With 'experts' like this given uncritical air-time on the BBC and teaching his racist ideology to 'impressionable young people', a better inquiry would be into the radicalisation of his own students, and the lack of critical interview skills within the BBC.Siva must stay!

Pics and report from demo today on College GreenSiva has been in detention since last Wednesday and is on hunger strike. These demos are a really important way for us to gather support for his right to stay here in Bristol.
Around thirty friends and supporters staged a cricket themed demonstrationas he was part of two local teams. We held placards that showed Siva's face and that of his two young children, who he is at risk of being separated from.
Bristol has become Siva’s home and he has many friends here. He is a valued member of two local cricket teams and the Refugee Welcome Centre where he regularly volunteers to cook lunch for 130 people. Caroline Beatty, Manager of the Refugee Welcome Centre, said. “Siva has lived half his life in UK . It is abhorrent suddenly to uproot someone like this.'
Siva’s local MP Stephen Williams is supprting the call to halt the deportation.
“Siva is an amazing young man, full of life and positive energy; he is a spark of inspiration to us all.”, Said Rowan Matthiessen one of the protesters.

This is his 5th day of hunger strike, but we spoke to Siva by phone, and from the filthy cell at Heathrow detention centre and he was cheered on by knowing we were there.
