Still time to stop Tesco in Stokes Croft [1]

Elisabeth Winkler writes: The No Tesco in Stokes Croft campaign has successfully kept the empire-building Tesco out of our community for a year. There are two more ways to help the campaign.
Reputed to be the last high street in the UK not to have corporate retailer, Stokes Croft has made it clear it wants to stay that way. Campaigning by the No Tesco in Stokes Croft and a fiercely active community has kept the multinational out of Stokes Croft for a year. Tesco did not get full planning permission on 22 September 2010, an historic community day which saw over 200 protestors fill the Council chambers. Nor did Tesco get an alcohol license for its proposed store in Stokes Croft, thanks to hundreds of letters of objection sent to Bristol City Council.
The community’s objections were supported by the police who argued that another retailer selling (cheap) alcohol in the area would increase existing problems of "pre-loading" and street drinking.

Two more ways to take action
1. WRITE / EMAIL Bristol City Council about two vital planning issues before 7 December
a) Noise
Tesco's recent noise report is wholly inaccurate and misleading. Tesco cannot comply with the Council's noise conditions.
b) Traffic
Because goods are delivered "just-in-time" from centralised depots, a Tesco Express (by Tesco's own reckoning) would get 6 deliveries a day, 42 a week. These would block the cycle path, bus stop and two pedestrian crossings on either side.

2) Plan to attend the Council meeting to find out if these objections have been heard - it will be another historic day for the community.

UWE Occupation and Week of Actions Against Cuts
19-11-2010 12:22
UWE students to occupy Frenchay Mon 22nd Nov! Lend your support.Dear Bristol Indymedia, We are writing to let you know that UWE students will be occupying Frenchay campus on Monday 22nd of Novemeber from 4pm, as part of a week of actions taking place next week to resist the fee increases and cuts both to education and across the public sector more broadly. Please spread the word and come down and lend us your support!!!
Dear Bristol Indymedia,
Students at the University of the West of England are occupying Frenchay campus on Monday 22nd November, from 4pm. The occupation is part of a week of actions that are protesting fee increases and cuts both to education and across the public sector more broadly. For more info on the events following the occupation, see below and visit the Face Book Page: 'UWE Students Against the Cuts' (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=162641213748580&r...ef=mf).
This is shaping up to be a really exciting week in the fight back against cuts in Bristol. But we need as much help as we can get!!! Please help spread the word as far and as wide as possible, and come down and visit our ‘education camp’ on Monday. Please bring anything and everything you think could be of use, from kettles, tea bags and cakes to banners, paint, old bed sheets, music and mega-phones. We need it all!
You can reach us at the Face book group, email us at uwe.better.together@gmail.com, or call 07586453336.
In solidarity,
UWE students
Mon 22nd: Occupation of Frenchay campus. Assemble at 4pm in corridor outside entrance to Library and Core24 cafe.
Tue 23rd: Rally outside the governors' meeting on Frenchay campus. Called
by the University and College Union, students will be standing alongside them. Bristol University students are also lending their support. We're meeting outside the Red Bar on the
courtyard there at 2.30, rally at 3pm.
Wed 24th: National walkout. Frenchay, St. Matts and Bower Ashton campuses
Are all walking out at 11am. We will then make our way to town to meet with
both Bristol university students and students from further education
colleges on the green next to the Wills Memorial building.
Thu 2525th: UWE AGM. Our students union is having its annual general meeting
so we're trying to get them to be much more explicit about opposing
education cuts. Any UWE students out there that somehow haven’t heard of this yet, please get down there and make your vote count.

About 1,100 people have died from the disease since it emerged in the country last month.
