quick report on squashtastic action tonight
01-11-2011 00:55
the government's sham consultation over legislation (which they've already announced they will bring in) was met this evening with action from squatting activists.
the short government consultation resulted in 95% of respondents, including police, housing associations, homeless charities, and activists, who were against government plans to criminalise squatting. yet the government is hoping to pass the new legislation as part of a legal bill which is also withdrawing legal aid from women in cases of domestic violence, and from people who have been unlawfully arrested or raided by police.
as a result of the govt ignoring its own democratic process, the squash campaign group called for action tonight and tomorrow.
this evening, a 300-strong critical mass bike ride joined together with pedestrians at high street kensington, and began with a protest outside the evening standard hq (over its scaremongering and inaccurate reports on squatters).
now, a group is sleeping out at the old palace yard opposite parliament (just to the west of parliament square). meanwhile there are reports that the critical mass was "attacked" by police on the new king's road.
the old palace yard group are calling for support - bring sleeping bags.
in the morning, they will be performing a "mass homelessness registration" at 9am at the westminster housing options service at 101 orchardson street nw8 (as in room 101?)
later from noon they are holding a rally outside parliament and from 2.30 they have a committee room booked where you can meet your MP face to face to ask them to vote against the amendment.
the day will end with another critical mass bike ride (meeting at waterloo bridge at 5pm - sound system arranged).

Orwellian "Minister for for Civil Society", Nick Hurd, has defended the JNF Charitible Trust, denying their funding of the ethnic cleansing of Palestine.

Here is a letter from my MP:
Dear X,
Re: Jewish National Fund
I enclose a letter I have recieved from the Minister in response to the concerns you raised in respect of the JNF.
If I can be of assistance in the future please do not hesitate to contact me.
Yours sincerely,
Chi Onwurah
Labour MP for Newcastle Central
Cabinet Office
Nick Hurd MP
Minister for Civil Society
Our Ref: MP317407
Dear Chi,
Thank you for your letter of 13 September to the Ministerial Correspondence Unit at the home office on behalf of X, about the Jewish National Fund (JNF) and EDM 1677. Your letter has been passed to the Cabinet Office for reply as I am minister with responsibility for the law in relation to charities.
Your constituent asks that you support EDM 1677 calling for the withdrawal of the charitible status of the JNF. Whilst it is, of course, for you to decide whether or not to support this EDM I will set out the government's position on the charitible status of the JNF in the UK.
The Charity Commission (the Commission), the independent non-Ministerial Government department responsible for the registration and regulation of charities in England and Wales, has confirmed that it has no jurisdiction over the organisation known as the JNF but that the JNF Charitable Trust is a registered charity and is also registered with Companies House. The Commission has also confirmed that it is satisfied that the charities funds are being used in an exclusively charitible manner and that the JNF Charitible trusts activities fall within the charity law for England and Wales. It has an income in its last financial year of £19,643,000. Its charitible purposes are; "The relief of poverty, and the furtherance of any other purposes which are charitible according to English law, within the State of Isreal as constituted from time to time. especially such charitible purposes as benefit persons of Jewish religion, race or origin."
The Charity Commission has had several concerns raised with it about the JNF Charitible Trust over the past few years. These have included complaints that the charitys funds were being used in a discriminatory or racist way and that the charity has been involved in non-charitible political activity. Some of the complaints have requested that the charity's charitible status be revoked. The commission has followed-up these concerns, corresponded with and met with the trustees of the charity, and is satisfied that the JNF Charitible Trust's activitise fall within UK law and the charity's objects.
Although JNF Charitible Trust has confirmed that it works with other agencies in Israel, some of whose activities are not charitible, the charity has also advised the Charity Commission that it closely monitors the use of its funds to ensure that its own funds are only used in connection with projects which are wholly charitable under UK law.

Dean of St Paul’s Resigns over OccupyLSX
31-10-2011 16:55
Occupy London responds to resignation of the Dean of St Paul’s
The Occupy London occupations, at London Stock Exchange (by St Paul’s Churchyard) and at Finsbury Square, are about social justice, real democracy and challenging the unsustainable financial system that punishes the many and privileges the few.
The management of St Paul’s Cathedral is obviously deeply divided over the position they have taken in response to our cause – but our cause has never been directed at the staff of the Cathedral. Nor have we ever called for ‘scalps’ as reported in the media.
We ask that St Paul’s Institute publish its report into renumeration in the financial sector and call on those of all faiths and none to be part of a call for change. Together, we are the 99 per cent.

31-10-2011 10:55
There has been an anti-war presence at Occupy LSX outside St Paul's almost every day with Ciaron O'Reilly, Ben Griffin and others speaking in public about Bradley Manning, the ongoing war in Afghanistan and war resistance amongst other things. It's shocking how many people still aren't familiar with Bradley Manning's name or the Collateral Murder footage, though everyone knows about the leaked cables and war logs
Ciaron is a Catholic Worker, long-time war resister and ex-prisoner of the US. Ben is an Iraq war veteran, war refuser and founder member of Veterans for Peace UK..
As well as aiming to raise awareness of Bradley Manning's situation, detained for 16 months without trial in the US, the action was in solidarity with Julian Assange, who expects to hear the outcome of his extradition appeal next week and with Michael Lyons. Lyons is the British Navy conscientious objector who was influenced by reading the WikiLeaks disclosures attributed to Bradley Manning. He is currently serving a sentence in a military prison for standing up for his beliefs..
The speeches have generated a lot of interest, with many people coming up to speak with Ben and Ciaron afterwards, taking flyers and addresses to write to Bradley and Michael in prison.
Veterans for Peace would like to hear from any UK military vets who are interested in working together for peace. Complete this form to get involved..
We are veterans based in the UK committed to promoting peace through non-violent action.Veterans from all three branches of the UK military may join.
Veterans from other countries based in the UK may also join.
We are independent of any political party or movement.
We are not concerned with political power only the promotion of peace.
Meanwhile, in the US, the LGBTQ space at Occupy Berkeley has been named for Bradley Manning. Camp Manning opened on Friday with an invitation for people to bring along their tents and sleeping bags and create the space.
