Wed 2nd November: Radwaste Demo at High Court in London

for kingscliffe waste watchers | 31.10.2011 09:01 | Anti-Nuclear

There will be a demo outside the Royal Courts of Justice, The Strand, London on Wednesday 2nd November from 9.30am in solidarity with Kingscliffe Waste Watchers' legal challenge to the Secretary of State's decision to allow the disposal of nuclear waste at King's Cliffe, Northamptonshire. This demo coincides with the Free Assange! Demo happening same place, same time. Come along and show your solidarity with both Assange and the Radwaste objectors.

BACKGROUND

Papers were lodged at the High Court in London by lawyers acting on behalf of village resident Louise Bowen-West, who is bringing the claim on behalf of the local community as a matter of public interest. The challenge centres on a narrow, but significant, point of law.

The named defendants are the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, Northamptonshire County Council and waste management company Augean PLC who want to bring the radioactive waste to the site.

The current planning permission for the disposal of hazardous and radioactive waste at the King's Cliffe landfill is due to expire in August 2013. Augean have already begun the process of submitting new applications for further development of the site.

There are 3 new appications, and all are being submitted concurrently:

1. Extension in time of the present permission until 2016
2. Extension of void space on the site - approximately 1 million
cubic metres, and time extension to run until 2026
3. Extension of time for the soil treatment plant until 2026
