Australia could be landed with a dependent NZ if we become part of Australia. In my view, we will be like 'an anchor their your neck'. Our collectivist bill of rights, Australia is also seriously considering a bill of rights, is reducing the population to a state of dependency. I consider, if we join with Australia it should be a matter of mutual choice and not out of our desperation by our being reduced to 'third world status' and the 'begging bowl'. J30 - A STRIKE MEANS NOBODY AND NOTHING WORKS
On June 30th up to 1 million workers across the country will be walking out on strike. In Nottingham members of the PCS, ATL, NUT and UCU (further education) will be co-ordinating their walkouts to make the day as effective as possible. In other parts of the country some council workers in Unison and Unite are balloting for action and RMT tube workers are striking.
Nationally the AF has issued a statement on the day:
ORGANISING
Locally we will be building for the day. Here are some ideas of what we think people should be doing locally to help build and strengthen the strike:
- Strengthening the strike pickets as much as possible. Everyone should support these by going to their nearest picket. This means not just workers in that sector but everyone who is affected by the cuts- other workers, school students, FE and HE students, pensioners, the unemployed
- Refusing to cross picket lines
- Joining the strike even if you are not a paid up member of a union
- Organising meetings in the workplaces in the run up to June 30th to get maximum support for the strike
- School students and further education students ( where they are still at school because many terms will be ending) should turn out to support teachers and lecturers and organise their own actions
- Most university students will have finished their academic year. However, where possible they should support the strike pickets and demonstrations where they can
- The widest possible solidarity has to be reached between teaching staff and support staff. In all sectors, whether education, the civil service or transport the greatest involvement of those not "officially" on strike
- Encourage those who feel they cannot take part in supporting the strike including workers in other sectors to phone in sick on the day
- On June 30th delegations from picket lines to visit other workplaces to encourage solidarity action. The organisation of local marches and assemblies where possible
- Publicise the strike in the local communities to make the day effective, help bring them onboard, explain your positions and what you have in common.
- Collect funds to help pay strike pay and funds for actions
- Occupy! The occupation has always been a part of the armoury of the working class as much as the strike. Strike everywhere! Occupy everything!

FBI to Expand Domestic Surveillance Powers as Details Emerge of Its Spy Campaign Targeting Activists

Civil liberties advocates are raising alarm over news the FBI is giving agents more leeway to conduct domestic surveillance. According to the New York Times, new guidelines will allow FBI agents to investigate people and organizations "proactively" without firm evidence for suspecting criminal activity. We speak to former FBI agent Mike German, who now works at the American Civil Liberties Union, and Texas activist Scott Crow, who has been the focus of intense FBI surveillance from 2001 until at least 2008. Using the Freedom of Information Act, Crow received 440 pages of heavily redacted documents revealing the FBI had set up a video camera outside his house, traced the license plates of cars parked in front of his home, recorded the arrival and departure of his guests, and observed gatherings that Crow attended at bookstores and cafes. The agency also tracked Crow’s emails and phone conversations and picked through his trash to identify his bank and mortgage companies. “It’s been definitely traumatizing at different points,” says Crow. “But if we don’t come out and be open about this, then they’ve already won, and the surveillance and the ‘war on terror’ wins against us.”

It was a simple question.
On 27 March I wrote to my Member of Parliament asking: "What is the British government planning to do, please, to safeguard British subjects (and indeed the other humanitarians) sailing with the flotilla on its peaceful mission to Gaza?"
The government had been only too happy, I said, to dispatch the warships Cumberland and York to help civilians of all nationalities caught up in the Libyan trouble and deliver aid to the Benghazi medical centre.

Peaceful protestors arrested. Cut the TSG!

I am livid, for one very simple reason: I have just watched four peaceful protestors be violently arrested by the Metropolitan Police. Countless others I watched get pushed, shoved, and punched. Subsequently another was arrested at a demo outside Holborn Police Station against the initial arrests. Several vans of TSG were deployed to this, again entirely peaceful, in front of a fortified police station to which a couple of dozen students and academics could pose no meaningful threat. A dog section was present, both at SOAS and outside the Police Station.
