A report on London CAAT's protest at the Clarion-owned International Fine Art & Antiques Fair
London CAAT members maintained the pressure on Clarion Events with a demonstration outside the International Fine Art & Antiques Fair at Kensington Olympia. After being moved on by the over-zealous security guards, we took up a position outside the entrance to the tube station. Our brand new banner 'This Show is Brought to you by the Arms Trade' gained a lot of attention and a number of passersby stopped to ask why we there. Indeed, a few people agreed with our stance and one did not enter the fair once he'd been made aware of the fair's links to the arms trade. However, not everyone agreed with us, in particular one gentleman who listened carefully to our reasons for protesting and then stormed off saying 'I support the arms trade, I love shooting people'. You can't win them all!
London CAAT will continue to pressure Clarion Events in the run up to DSEi, in particular by lending their support to the vigils that are taking place outside their offices in Hatton Gardens on the first Wednesday of every month. As we stormed the London streets on Saturday, a defining moment for me was when we walked past a group of builders. They downed tools and just stared at us, open mouthed. No cat calls, no wolf whistles, no smarmy comments – they read the signs, they shut up. I’m sure for many women there it was the first time we’ve managed to walk past a building site and not had our anatomy dissected by men who are often older than us, probably with daughters our age.
This is what I think gets misunderstood. There’s a difference between someone paying you a compliment and someone wolf whistling or saying ‘nice tits’. I have had men say to me in the street ‘you look nice today’ and been bowled over by the fact they seem to have manners. It’s such a rarity. The majority of the time, I get hissed at, whistled at (you know, like you would an animal), told I have nice tits, nice legs, told I should wear my skirt a little shorter, told how nice my ass looks. When your first comment to me is sexual, how am I to know you’ll just leave it at a comment? What may be an innocent comment to you, I have no choice but to take a a possible threat.

The next Rising Tide Cafe will be at 7.00 pm (for food) on Monday, 13th June at Cafe Kino (on the corner of Stokes Croft and Ashley Road).We will be discussing the new lunatic method of extracting fossil fuels called 'Fracking' and showing the Academy Award nominatated documentary film 'Gasland' (about Fracking in the USA see www.gaslandthemovie.com)
The next Rising Tide Cafe will be at 7.00 pm (for food) on Monday, 13th June at Cafe Kino (on the corner of Stokes Croft and Ashley Road).
We will be discussing the new lunatic method of extracting fossil fuels called 'Fracking' and showing the Academy Award nominatated documentary film 'Gasland' (about Fracking in the USA see www.gaslandthemovie.com)
There are various plans for fracking projects in the UK including in S.Wales and we have invited Welsh activists to this event.
This is a FREE EVENT and food is available to buy at Cafe Kino - everyone is welcome (apart from the cops).
This event is hosted by Bristol Rising Tide which is part of the international Rising Network of groups and individuals taking action against the root causes of climate injustice.

Additional info: Shell and other fossil fuel companies are currently promoting gas fracking to the UK government, claiming the UK.can meet its emissions targets using this cheaply extracted fossil fuel - more cheaply than with renwables. Organisers of an anti sexual violence demonstration in Glasgow city centre on Saturday 4 June are facing possible charges after Strathclyde Police reported two individuals to the Procurator Fiscal for what they claim was an 'unauthorised' march. This follows a huge police operation which was mounted on the day of the 'Slutwalk', which saw around 200 mostly young people taking part in a completely peaceful march against rape and victim blaming, in light of recent comments by various Tory politicians on the matter.

Intergalactic solidarity-call for the preservation of trailor-parc Kommado Rhino
Two years after the squatting of the so-called M1-ground in Freiburg-Vauban, the police is due to evict the waggon-squat Kommando Rhino after july the 31st 2011. We call everyone to support the diverse actions for the preservation of the art-, culture- and waggonspace-collective. Come to Freiburg to defend a unique self-managed residential-project!
In allusion a genevan squat, evicted with Schröders help in 2007, the waggon-collective „Rhino“ was founded in the early summer of 2009, to squat the whole M1-area and stay on it ever since. About 40 people and animals live there now, in lorries und caravans. The hughe ancient advertising-pannel was transformed into a Bar and many other Buildings where made: A people's kitchen, a Sauna and a pavillion within the central „pebble-parc“.
Because of political end economical tilts, the green-buisness project finally failed to be built. The administration then decided to sell the grounds to the city-owned housing-company Freiburger Stadtbau (FSB).
At no moment, the needs of the residents were sincerely involved in the plannings. Even a green-city doesn't care about involving the concerned. Like in other towns, there is no interest in giving people cheap or free space for living and deployment. The town of Freiburg illustrates these logics in empeaching the creation of a self-managed youth-center, in raising the rents, in swamping out the precarian parts of society and in cutting on social and cultural projects.
In the last years more and more organization was done in some neighbourhoods to encounter these logics. Some houses got squatted - and mostly evicted - , rent-strikes where done (with some success) and more and more demonstrations and actions were linked to the gentrification-thematics.The state counters these processes with repression.
At Kommando Rhino, people try to live an alternative to the systematics of hierarchies and exploitation. Cheap housing was created and cultural potential is beeing promoted and self-organized. For years the city refused to assume the needs of the Vauban-residents – as it's due to be within capitalism. The administration is more to emulate so it could finally become a corporate-city. It want's to build a green-painted concrete-block and make a lot of money – and an anarchist trailor-parc is a pain int he arse for them.
We're not apealing to their system of ugly-representation and profit. We believe in decentrality, autonomy and solidarity. We are decided fight, so that Kommando Rhino remains! Come to Freiburg, support Kommando Rhino!
Get this: At day, the rhinoceros sleeps. It is active at twilight and at night and attacks anyone that ain't complaisant...
