Birmingham: May Day International Worker's day
07-05-2011 19:11
May Day celebrates International Workers Day and is marked traditionally when the Trade Union Movement gathers with the community to celebrate our achievements and to commit ourselves to achieving economic and social justice for all.
Birmingham TUC worked together with Birmingham Against the Cuts and invited trades unionists, students and the public to join this demonstration to stop the cuts and fight for an alternative based on our needs, not bankers greed!
DPAC was there with our stall and banner at the start at St Philips Cathedral – we were to march through part of the city centre to Victoria Sq where there were speeches. I joined Matt, Linda and Paul there to hand out leaflets and chat to the people there. It was a lively crowd and people seemed genuinely interested to stop and chat and to take up handouts. There was a UKuncut group dressed up in white body suits with black tipped markings – they said the body stockings were what the UKuncut people (Fortnum and Mason Solidarity Bloc) had to wear after the Fortnum and Mason event in London, 26th march. Next to our stall was the Confronting Anti Muslim Hatred stall. There was also an anti war stall.

Bin Laden: Years of Deceit

Bin laden never mentioned inMcchrystal report or Obama speech
"Hunt for bin laden” a national shame
Conservative commentator, former Marine Colonel Bob Pappas has been saying for years that bin Laden died at Tora Bora and that Senator Kerry’s claim that bin Laden escaped with Bush help was a lie. Now we know that Pappas was correct. The embarrassment of having Secretary of State Clinton talk about bin Laden in Pakistan was horrific. He has been dead since December 13, 2001 and now, finally, everyone, Obama, McChrystal, Cheney, everyone who isn’t nuts is finally saying what they have known for years.

Another Armed Turnout by Nottinghamshire Police
07-05-2011 01:25
Thursday 5th May
In the middle of the local election day, I happened across another armed turnout by Nottinghamshire Police.
At about 12.00 noon, at an address at the top of Woodborough Road on the Mapperley Plain, there were 5 police vehicles and for a brief period the force helicopter.
It appeared to be a news-worthy event and I took these pictures. It is the latest in a number of such incidences that I've witnessed. I am concerned [as many are], that although police generally are un-armed, these appearences do appear to me becoming more frequent. Becoming more normal in fact.
I have no idea of the issue or threat here. I consulted the Nottinghamshire Police newswire on their website and rang the 'voicebank' for further information, but the incident was not recorded on either.
I thus emailed the force press office to ask for a statement on the incident but have received no reply. So have hung about a bit before posting these so can only say that Nottinghamshire Police had no comment to make.

Censorship at University of Nottingham
07-05-2011 01:25
Last week, an article entitled, ‘Radicalisation at universities or radicalisation by universities?’ by University of Nottingham academic Rod Thornton was published, shedding more light on the case of the “Nottingham Two”. This article has now been removed from the website of the British International Studies Association (BISA) allegedly under pressure from the University, who have also now suspended Dr Thornton.
On the newswire: University whistleblower suspended | ‘Al-Qaeda Arrest’ Whistleblower Silenced
Previous features: New light shed on the Nottingham Two | Campaign Victories As Hich And Amdani Are Released On Bail | Hundreds Join Demo for Academic Freedom and Against Deportation | Nottingham Uni Detainee Innocent But Still Facing Deportation | Anger Over “Terror Arrests” at Nottingham University
Article: Executive summary | Full article
Dr Rod Thornton was suspended on afternoon of May 4th by Nottingham University for exposing how the university caused the arrest of two innocent men as suspected terrorists. The new whistle-blowing report from Dr Thornton – ‘How a student’s use of a library book became a “major Islamist plot”’ – exposed how senior University management reported the men and undertook a subsequent campaign to discredit them for being in possession of three publicly available documents, all available from the university’s own library.
A letter written by Vice-Chancellor David Greenaway, was hand-delivered to Dr Thornton and ordered him to vacate his office. The Vice-Chancellor wrote: "the decision has been taken to suspend you until further notice … [because of a] … breakdown in working relationships with your colleagues caused by your recent article prepared for the British International Studies Association Conference.” Dr Thornton, said: “I am very saddened by the university’s behaviour".
Rizwaan Sabir, one of the men originally arrested, said: "Dr Thornton’s article proves that university management singled me out for differential treatment, despite my innocence. It is apparent that they and certain staff attempted to undermine my future at the university, perhaps because I would have been a constant reminder of their anti-terror cock up! The findings of this research, along with Nottingham’s attempts to censor it, are damning. Such cavalier behaviour should not be tolerated in British academia. I call on the government to launch an independent public inquiry into the conduct of the university."
