It is important to stress what is going on…
In case you’re unaware, the University plans to cut 70% of the courses being offered at London Met. This is a clear, ideological attack on Higher Education. The Government’s decision to cut the HE budget by 40% is having very real, and devastating effects on the ground. For somewhere like London Met that is heavily subsidised, the impact is obviously worse. People’s lives, both students and staff, are currently being turned upside-down. Hundreds of redundancies are in process.

The Great British (animal exploiting) Circus is coming to Nottingham again from 10th to 22nd May
It's that time of year again. 'That time' being the annual visit of the Great British Circus to the Japanese Water Gardens at Toton.
The circus may be British but there's certainly nothing great about it. It is one of the few such shows that still exploits animals for public amusement.
Such shows should have been consigned to history long ago along with bear-baiting, performing monkeys and fairground freak shows.
I would appeal to anyone with a shred of decency of compassion reading this, not to visit this circus of shame and to encourage anyone else you know to do the same.

The neoliberal nightmare in education has started - but so has a fightback that can stop it. Students occupied the graduate centre on Wednesday, while the UCU and UNISON branches are preparing for strike action. Greenwich University has also occupied over the philosophy department being cut. .Please go to the link to watch a 6 minute film.
London Metropolitan University is planning to cut 70% of it's courses - around 400, including history, philosophy, performing arts, trade union studies and carribean studies (the only course of its kind in the country). It also plans to slash many of its student support services, including the acclaimed Learning Development Centre.
It is clear now that London Met is being used as a testing ground to bring in privatisation in education. Vice chancellor Professor Malcolm Gillies is also the executive director of the only private university in Holland - a business school charging 15,000 euros a year in fees - with compulsory add on charges for extra services and trips. Funnily enough, business is one of the few areas at London Met that isn't being cut.
Gillies" right hand man is Jonathan Woodhead, previously the chief researcher in Universities minister David Willetts office. Willetts has already said that he wants to introduce private universities - and suddenly here's Woodhead overseeing the asset stripping of London Met in preparation for privatisation.
London Metropolitan University has the most ethnically diverse student population in the country, predominately working-class and with a reputation for giving a second chance in education to those who were failed by the system the first time round. If these cuts go through, that ethos will be replaced by one of education just for the privileged, with the rest of us trained to be cannon fodder for low paid jobs in a neoliberal, privatised economy.

the fifth trafalgar square 'occupation against the cuts' takes place this weekend. a 24-hour overnight occupation will begin at 18.30 tomorrow (saturday).

Trafalgar Square Anti Cuts Occupation continues 7 May for 24-hours
Now going into its second month, the Trafalgar Square Anti Cuts Occupation
continues with another 24-hours peaceful occupation from 6.30pm Saturday
7 May. Last week’s 48-hour May Day weekend occupation was a great
success, with campers engaging the public and those in attendance for
the May Day rally.
Given the local elections and the AV referendum taking place, this weekend
could be an interesting as the results come out and the ramifications
become clear. As such, the camp invites people to bring their tents and
join the occupation which includes anti cuts activists, students,
workers, trade unionists, professionals and homeless people.
People are welcome to come for as long as they want, whether camping for the
entire occupation or just to pop in for a cup of tea or workshop.
Artists, performers, speakers and workshop leaders are also invited.
Mutual respect and personal responsibility are central to the camp
ethos. All attending are coming as individuals - there are no organisers
- so people are asked to be aware of their rights. People are also
asked to bring food to share, to look after the area and put litter in
the bins provided.
Key aims of the occupation are:
- To raise awareness of the ideological cuts that the Government is
instigating - without mandate - and how they are affecting the most
vulnerable in society. - To create a safe space for all, including parents and children, where
alternatives to current policy can be learned about and discussed, with
workshops, talks, debates and creative art. - To defend the right to protest. The recent actions of the police,
including pre-emptive arrests, have made this particularly important. By
simply being present in Trafalgar Square and by engaging with the
public, we defend the ability to dissent without fear of the
consequences of doing so. The group also intends to show that without
police presence, protesters can organise themselves peacefully and
lawfully. This has already been demonstrated on previous occupations,
when the police stayed at a distance and there was no conflict. If there
are attempts to remove participants, they will resist non-violently.
