FutureMuseum presents: CATALYSM

28-10-2010 19:22

Museum exhibition at the Emporium
The Museum of the Catalysm features a range of artefacts, scale models and reconstructions showing what life was like before, during, and after the catalytic events of the 21st and 22nd centuries. Showcasing treasures from the age of affluence alongside examples of the creative solutions that characterised life during and after the crisis, the Museum presents a spectacular and fascinating archaeology of growth, collapse and survival - and the lessons to be learnt from our turbulent past.

After its first spectacular debut as a travelling exhibit in the Bristol Village Fayre earlier this year, FUTUREMUSEUM is looking to expand its display to incorporate a greater range of exhibits from its collection, alongside new models and artist’s reconstructions that will focus on the time of regeneration and recovery that was the birth of our society as it is today.

Piecing together a fragmented history from the objects and stories which reach us from the past, the exhibition perhaps asks more questions than it can answer, but there is plenty to think about in the well-considered displays, and you will find your imagination fired by the vivid stories and portrayals of life as it may have been.

Home Office stop-and-search figures hide evidence of systematic discrimination

A stop-and-search operation at the East Ham tube station
Massoud Shadjareh, the Chairman of the Islamic Human Rights Commission, said today that the Home Office’s latest figures on numbers of people stopped and searched under anti-terrorism legislation fail to give the full picture when it comes to Muslim concerns about the discriminatory use of the powers to target Muslims in particular.

Verifying articles on this site

28-10-2010 15:22

An article appeared recently on the newswire involving the "outing" of an activist as an undercover policeman: http://bristol.indymedia.org/article/696047

There has been some discussion about the wisdom of having such articles on the newswire; the Bristol IndyMedia Collective (BIMC) wish to clarify some issues.

We hold the following truth to be self-evident: every article on Bristol IndyMedia, like any piece of media in the modern world, should be consumed critically. We should not "believe everything we read in the papers", but take the responsibility to analyse all the arguments, and doubt all the facts...

Having said this, BIMC appreciates that we (along with our users) have a responsibility to ensure that the quality of material on our newswire is of a reasonable standard. BIMC do not commit to checking every fact in every article, but we do take our general responsibility to standards very seriously. This is particularly important when articles are of a personal nature, and could have very serious implications for a person's life and happiness.

In the event of an article appearing on our newswire that is of a very personal nature we leave the following options open:

  1. we may choose to hide, or delete the article. We follow the usual editorial guidelines here - http://bristol.indymedia.org/editorial - but are particularly strict where damaging allegations are apparently uncorroborated and unproven.

  2. If we have the time and energy and we believe the article is particularly important, we may take it upon ourselves to seek verification of the article. Thus, although the article may be hidden in the first place, we can unhide it at a later date.

The method of verification can take a variety of forms. Simply doing some research and using respected sources can be enough. In the case of personal allegations things are more difficult. Our approach tends to be to use "networks of trust". Thus we seek to contact individuals whom we trust and who can vouch for the article, or who can vouch for other individuals who may be able to vouch for the article.

This is the method that we used to verify the article concerning the undercover policeman. We note that this is a difficult, and subjective process; its worth as a process tends to diminish as the chain of trust grows longer. On the other hand (sadly) the activist community is fairly small and so this method is generally effective.

It is very important to note that we do not commit to verifying any given article that appears on the newswire. We are a small bunch of volunteers with limited resources; it is largely up to individuals within BIMC to decide if they have the time to verify a particular article. Thus articles concerned with specific, damaging, individual allegations are quite likely to be hidden or deleted.

Given the general approach outlined above, users should be careful how they use the newswire. We expect users to maintain high standards; we also appreciate that users may not be able to publicise evidence for a particular article. In such a circumstance they should feel free to communicate with BIMC to ensure that, when their article is published, it is not immediately hidden or deleted. If people specifically request BIMC's help with questions of verification then we will always do our best to help out.

Party Invite

Remember battle of the Bean field?
Margaret Thatcher - not dead yet
Illness: Margaret Thatcher's spokesman confirmed today that she was making good progress but not expected to leave hospital in the next few days.

The unpopular ex-prime minister was admitted to the private Cromwell Hospital, in west London, on October 18 after failing to recover from a bout of flu.

She was forced to pull out of a Downing Street reception to mark her 85th birthday the previous week due to illness.
For those of you who may have been too busy fighting the Tories as they put the ‘N’ back into CUTS, you may be interested to hear what is happening to the much hated children’s milk snatcher. She’s about to die.
The maggots are drawing lots over who’s gonna have the sickening job of
chewing on its rotting flesh. Well we won’t have to wait too much longer now.

There will be a party in Trafalgar square to celebrate the end of this evil witches’ life.
There are many reasons why people will turn out to piss on its grave and a few of them are listed below.

Speaking for myself, one of the events that got me politicized was the way the pigs behaved towards children, women and men at what has become known as the Battle of the Beanfield. This took place when the pigs stopped several hundred members of a peace convoy from setting up the fourteenth Stonehenge free festival, in Wiltshire.

There were between 80 and 120 vehicles, most of them buses and vans that had been converted into living spaces by their owners -- New age travellers, along with several hundred people in the convoy

Northern Ireland (1981)
Bobby Sands began the strike, saying that he would fast until death unless prison inmates won concessions over their living conditions. Thatcher refused to countenance a return to political status for the prisoners, famously declaring "Crime is crime is crime; it is not political" and felt that Britain should not negotiate with terrorists.
Thatcher became an Irish Republican hate figure of Cromwellian proportions,
describing her as "the biggest bastard we have ever known"
Privatisation (1983–1987)
British Petroleum was privatised in stages in October 1979, September 1983 and November 1987; British Aerospace in January 1981 and 1985; the government share in British Sugar in July 1981; Cable and Wireless in November 1981; Amersham International and National Freight Corporation in February 1982; Britoil in November 1982 and August 1985; British Shipbuilders, Associated British Ports in February 1983; Jaguar in July 1984; British Telecom in November 1984; the National Bus Company in October 1986; British Gas in December 1986; British Airways in February 1987; the Royal Ordnance in April 1987; Rolls-Royce in May 1987; the British Airports Authority in July 1987; the Rover Group in August 1988; British Steel in December 1988; the Regional Water Authorities in November 1989; Girobank in July 1990; and the National Grid in December 1990.
Bombing of Libya
South Africa
In July 1986 Thatcher expressed her belief that economic sanctions against South Africa would be immoral.

Gulf War
Thatcher was visiting the United States when she received word that Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein had invaded neighbouring Kuwait. She met with US President George H. W. Bush, who had succeeded Ronald Reagan in 1989, during which Bush asked her, "Margaret, what is your view?" She recalled in an interview that she felt "that aggressors must be stopped, not only stopped, but they must be thrown out. An aggressor cannot gain from his aggression. He must be thrown out and really, by that time in my mind, I thought we ought to throw him out so decisively that he could never think of doing it again." She put pressure on Bush to deploy troops to the Middle East to drive the Iraqi army out of Kuwait.Bush was somewhat apprehensive about the plan, so Thatcher remarked to him during a telephone conversation, "This was no time to go wobbly!" Thatcher's government provided military forces to the international coalition in the Gulf War to pursue the ouster of Iraq from Kuwait.
Thatcher – a chemist, created toxic offspring, the twisted twins.

On 13 January 2005, Mark Thatcher, in a South African court, pleaded guilty to helping finance a coup plot in Equatorial Guinea. South African police were able to prove that Mr Thatcher had transferred about US$285,000 to the mercenaries that were to execute the operation and had met and talked frequently to them prior to the coup attempt. After pleading guilty, he was given a four-year suspended sentence and a fine of about US$ 560,000

Life is too short ... one demo is not enough!

28-10-2010 13:22

While the migration regime is fortifying itself and setting up rings of defence around European wealth, inner control is tightening to keep public order, at a time where the nation state already seems to be a dead corpse. And with an economy which exploits the most virtual property, the need to control even the remotest parts of people's lives is increasing. At the beginning of the year we went from St Pancras to the Westminster CCTV Headquarters (feature, pics, vid, audio) - this time we'll go the other way, so come down to Piccadilly Circus at 3pm this Saturday. Keep an eye open for our wire and don't forget to tag your posts litstbc!

Similar to the first protest in January 2010, the second "Life is too short ..." demonstration next Saturday (30 October) will connect two locations in London which are symbolic places of both the border regime and surveillance.

On January 23 2010, about 150 people marched from St.Pancras International ( London's border point) to Piccadilly Circus, location of Westminster's new CCTV Headquarter. So this time it's the other way round.

London NoBorders calls people to meet at 3pm this Saturday on Piccadilly Circus/corner of Coventry Street (Trocerdero is the entrance to the Westminster CCTV Bunker).

While the EU migration regime and its Agency Frontex is setting up rings of defence around European wealth, inner control is tightening to keep public order, at a time where the nation state already seems to be a dead corpse. Both external borders and interior surveillance are following the same principles: Movement of people is supposed to be monitored and channeled to maintain the "status quo", according to economic needs, to keep the idea of a nation state as a cultural and economic community alive.

This can only be changed if we challenge both national borders and "internal" surveillance at the same time, and if we accept people's autonomy to live their life how and where they want to.

As last time, people should feel encouraged to bring any kind of masks, as Westminster (and London in general) is nicely covered with CCTV.
