Save Courage Idiagbonya from deportation!

25-05-2010 13:47

[There is another Charter Flight to Nigeria this Thursday. Nigeria lacks the capacity to establish and maintain political institutions, secure their population from violent conflict, control their territories and meet the basic needs of their population. Is in free fall to becoming a failed state; 22nd in 'Fund for Peace' Failed States Index in 2006 it plummeted to 15th in 2009 a 32% decrease in living/human rights conditions in 3 years.]

195 Mare st stage is NOT getting demolished

25-05-2010 12:22

We were all thinking that we were going to lose the back part of the building on 195 Mare st, that includes the big hall and the stage, but the space is going to remain intact for as long as its occupied! :)

Related post : Queer Invisible Academy | Listen to Venezuela

On the first week end of May, we had a "Do It Because They Destroy It" festival. Few days of events because the part of the building that includes a big hall and a stage was going to get demolished.

195 Mare st is a very old listed building. It consists of a very old front part, and a more recent back part where the stage is. We had a deal with the owner that was pretty simple: while they demolish the back bit we get to stay in the front part until they re-develop the whole thing. For us it was a way to keep on doing all our activities and events for a good few months (and to still have a house!), even though the space would have been reduced.

But now, things have changed! The situation sounds complicated but basically the developers ran out of money, so some bank is kind of taking over and is after the owners to get some money back!! :) So whatever the bankers will do, it means that there will be no demolition anytime soon, the space will remain intact and the big hall and stage still available for wonderful events!

Don't hesitate then to come round to any of our regular activities, to our special events, or to propose any good use of the space!

//Free Skill sharing and regular events in 195 Mare st, Hackney, E8 3QE//

Always better to contact us to check if things are still happening (Everything's voluntarily run and the space is undergoing changes).

Most illegal migrants likely to be white

24-05-2010 22:35

If there is uncontrolled immigration, it is because the immigration authorities know that the people wants it. And it's not because of cheap labour, or silly conspiracy theories about undermining British culture. It is because of racial solidarity among white people.

Indymedia 10th Birthday Party

24-05-2010 19:22

After a few hectic days getting everything together and ready for the big celebration of 10 years of Indymedia in the UK, the party hosted by Dissident Island finally took place last Saturday night. Around 300 people turned up at the newly opened Social Centre in Camberwell to enjoy and dance to a great line up of bands and DJ sets, to watch films, and to have a toast or two at the bar. The party started at 4pm with a series of workshops and presentations and went on till the very sunny Sunday morning [Photos 1 | 2]

A comment posted in the IMC-UK wire sums up the general feeling most people expressed during bash:  "Thanks to Indymedia London and Dissident Island for a great celebration of 10 years of Indy UK, and cheers to the crew, performers and volunteers for all their hard work! Good luck with the social centre too."

A big shout from Indymedia London and Dissident Island to everyone that turned up to celebrate with us, and to all the bands, djs and crew that helped out on the night. We hope that the future brings many more years of independent, autonomous, radical and participatory media!

Some personal impressions of the party posted in the IMC-London wire:

I never made it beyond the lounge of the party were the bar was, and the cakes (thanks to whoever made that chocolate cake!) and the food. A large space, decorated with all the indymedia banners that accumulated over the last years.

There were a few fotocopies with a big barcode and instructions scattered on the walls. Apparently you could point your mobile to the barcode, take a picture and the barcode reader of your mobile would read the barcode and take you straight to the indymedia London publishing page so that you could upload the foto with no fumbling around. But it seems that nobody took advantage of this new high-tech service, otherwise there should be lots of party pictures on this site!

This was probably the first no smoking indymedia party. Luckily, the building has a beautiful roof terrace where smoking was ok.

Very few leaflets on site, I only remember a few dissident island flyers. I'd taken some money with me in case there would be books or DVDs to buy, but in a way it was nice not to concentrate on shopping and getting informed, but on socialising. The way the building was arranged for the party really encouraged that. The largest space, what I call the lounge, was without bands or djs, only some videos were shown in one corner. Altogether it was rather quiet, a good place to catch up with people without screaming short sentences into each others ears. DJs and bands played in two extra rooms.

What I liked about the party was that you could see that different groups were involved in making it happen. On the roof terrace was some great graffiti made by the tatoo circus, who I made the building fit for use for their own event. The party was hosted by dissident island and friends. The indymedia collective and friends helped with logistics, technix and decorations and got people together to help at bar and door. Probably other people were involved that i don't know about.

On saturday evening, the place was not really visible from the outside. All you could see was a half-open shutter, and some people coming in and out throughout the night. But soon the building will be opened as a social center, a place for non-commercial socialising. Hopefully the shutters will be open for a long time.

UK Bristol airport gets green light for expansion
Mon May 24, 2010 11:37am EDT

Clearance by North Somerset Council will allow the airport to press ahead with plans to handle 10 million passengers by 2019-20, up from around six million at present.

The airport, jointly owned by a unit of Australia's Macquarie (MQG.AX) and Ontario Teachers Pension Plan, is the ninth largest in Britain, a spokesman said on Monday.

The expansion plan was focused around the existing site and did not involve an additional runway or terminal.

Separately, British airports operator BAA, owned by Spanish builder Ferrovial (FER1.MC), said it had dropped plans to build additional runways at Heathrow and Stansted airports in London in the face of opposition from Britain's new government.
