How to deal with the EDL

21-03-2010 18:10

A UAF meeting in Bristol was recently disrupted by some EDL supporters. While SWP students were happy to simply wail 'nazi scum' in hysterical voices, for some of us, it has opened up some interesting questions about how to deal with the rank and file of the EDL. Below are the orginial post, and some of the responses from Bristol Indymedia - hopefully this can start a debate about the different ways we can deal with the EDL - Discuss!

Radford community on the march

21-03-2010 11:51

Audio
Yesterday, over 100 members of the Radford community braved pouring rain to march from the Radford Unity Complex (RUC) to Nottingham's Market Square. They were protesting the City Council's proposed sell off of the RUC to an unknown buyer, despite the fact that many community groups have been using the building for over 20 years. Speeches were made at Speakers' Corner and then the group congregated outside the Council House. The mood was good natured and energetic but people were angry and defiant.

The battle of Bolton and the media

20-03-2010 21:42

Anti-fascist protesters emerged victorious on Saturday after holding Bolton’s central Victoria Square against the racists from the English Defence League.

But mainstream national media reports are presenting it as a contest between two violent groups – and blaming the anti-fascists for the violence.

Anti-fascists faced brutality from police with dogs and on horseback. There were over 60 arrests – 55 Unite Against Fascism and 9 EDL, according to Sky news – including UAF leader Weyman Bennett “on suspicion of conspiracy to commit violent disorder”. The police commander made disgraceful allegations about the protesters.

Yarl's Wood Migrant Solidarity Noise Demo

20-03-2010 19:05

On Sunday March 14th around 40 people gathered at Yarl's Wood immigration detention centre to show solidarity with the hunger strikers. Drummers and trumpeters turned out in force to let the women inside know of the wide support for their struggle. The demonstrators also made clear their view that detention of migrants is wrong, and the imprisonment of women and children in particular highlights the perversity of border enforcement.

Election Meltdown

20-03-2010 16:35

Election Meltdown is gearing up for action in this sham election.
The politicians for sale at Westminster have no plans for our future. We need to take it into our hands.
We don't see any choice on offer except between bankers, bankers and more bankers, between capitalism, capitalism and more capitalism. We demand an equal and accountable voice for all, but we don't see any prospect of democratic representation by politicians who are in the pockets of corporate vested interests.
Right now we live under a dictatorship of the rich, a tiny minority hogging the world’s resources, who make all the decisions about the planet and our future to satisfy their greed. It’s time for democracy to dictate back to the rich!
So all of us who are fed up and disgusted, cry
DEATH TO THE ELECTION!
Vote for a hung parliament!
Let's blow one big raspberry at the whole election charade on Mayday, taking over Parliament Square for a popular carnival on Saturday May 1st.
The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse will be galloping back from four corners, dragging the carcasses of the four politicans chosen by the people to be hanged!
Then we will plant the People's Tree where a People's Assembly will camp and convene throughout the sham election period.
