Refugees in Calais. Why we say NO BORDERS!

26-06-2009 23:44

Hundreds queue on a Calais industrial estate.
A few years ago that nice Mr Sarkozy (then French home secretary) was desperate to impress that even nicer Mr Blair. So to capitulate to Mr Blair and his masters in the British tabloid media, he closed the Red Cross Sangatte refugee camp near Calais. Prior to its demolition Sangatte was a place where vulnerable refugees fleeing places like Iraq, Somalia and Afghanistan could get food, healthcare and a bed for the night. By a staggering coincidence Great Britain has had rather a lot of influence in the fortunes of Iraq, Somalia and Afghanistan. So some people might suggest that we have a slight responsibility with regard to helping these people? Now (post Sangatte) they have to sleep under bridges and in dangerous camps where they are regularly attacked by the Police and local racists. Fortunately they are being fed each day by a number of unpaid volunteers from the Calais based 'Salam' charity who are doing an amazing job.

A Journalist Beaten -- One Year Later

26-06-2009 07:48

June 26, 2008 is a day I will never forget. For the events of that day irrevocably changed my life. That day I was detained, interrogated, strip searched, and tortured while attempting to return home from a European speaking tour, which culminated in independent American journalist Dahr Jamil and I sharing the Martha Gellhorn Journalism Prize in London -- an award given to journalists who expose propaganda which often masks egregious human rights abuses.

Latest No Borders scare story

26-06-2009 07:38

Read below for the latest crap slung out by the Daily Mail (faithfully reproduced in the Metro) about the NoBorder camp.
This is a huge debate to be had, but I am pretty sick of them saying what they want with no reprisals - one of the better aspects of climate camp is their willingness to attack media lies, forcing many retractions/apologies etc - maybe the same is needed here. If the press knew they would be challenged on every ridiculous lie printed about the anarchist movement, they may be a little more hesitant to print them. Anyways, the article is re-posted below -

Beginning of the End in Iran

25-06-2009 20:17

Ayatollah Khamenei’s June 19 speech reminded many Iranians of some of the utterances of the shah in the last months of his rule: former president and current chairman of the ‘assembly of experts’ Ali Akbar Rafsanjani cannot be corrupt – he has been the supreme leader’s friend for over 50 years! Everyone in Iran had accepted the results of the elections: it was all the fault of foreign powers and foreign media that some people are now doubting them! Conspiracies are all around us and, just as in colonial times, the British are behind it.
