Italy 2008 - Top of the European League of Workplace Deaths

07-08-2008 22:53

CENSIS, an Italian Institute for social investment (see below) issued its latest report.
1,170 workers were killed in the workplace in 2007.
In Italy in 2007 there were twice as many workplace deaths and 8 times as many road deaths as murders.
But the government is focusing all its energy on combating crime.
Giuseppe Roma, Censis Director General said: "It is very clear the distortion between real dangers and the steps that have to be taken to combat them. Measures are not in place in workplaces and roads to ensure that Italian citizens are safe there. People often think a road death is just an accident but the figures from other European countries show this is not true”.

Arrest Order Issued for the Japanese Whaling Fleet

07-08-2008 22:43

The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society has drawn up an arrest warrant for the Japanese whaling fleet.

“We intend to intervene against the continued illegal whaling activities of the Japanese fleet in the Antarctic Whale Sanctuary,” said Captain Paul Watson. “We intend to stop the killing of endangered species of whales in the Sanctuary, whales that are being killed in violation of the global moratorium on whaling. We intend to enforce the orders of the Australian Federal Court that has banned Japanese whalers from killing whales in the waters of the Australian Antarctic Territory. Our objective is to arrest the Nisshin Maru and its fleet of hunter killer boats.”

Police bullying at Camp Kingsnorth

07-08-2008 22:06

I’ve just returned from a 2-3 day sojourn at the Climate Camp at Kingsnorth — site of a proposed new coal-fired power station – which is now gearing up towards its climax. As usual the headlines focus upon policing and the inevitable ‘discovery’ of a weapons cache, more on which below. But once you make the effort – a word I use advisedly — to get through police lines and into the camp itself the overwhelming impression is of a D.I.Y. heaven: solar panels and a wind turbine being erected, water pipes connected, sanitation systems constructed, media and cinema tents put up, impromptu kitchens, cleaning zones … an al fresco and non-commercial soukh catering to the pleasures and necessities of daily life.

Those ever helpful cops...
Vans delivering food are being stopped by the Police and forced to unload a mile from the site.

The cops are constantly saying the words "health and Safety" to justify every bit of harrassment they dish out. Yet here they are forcing dozens of people to cross a fast and busy main road carrying heavy boxes??!
