Squeezing Palestinians into Impossible Mission

11-04-2007 16:09

The Israeli 40-year old military occupation and the more than a year old economic siege are eroding the national existence of Palestinians and squeezing the Palestinian leadership into an almost impossible mission of securing law and order by practically renewing an old plan thwarted because, in the end, it could not secure individual safety in the absence of national safeguards.

Vanunu Freedom Ride in Sheffield on Saturday April 14th 2007

11-04-2007 15:05

Mordechai Vanunu
For telling the world that Israel had nuclear weapons, Mordechai Vanunu spent 18 years in prison, 11 of these in complete solitary confinement. Although released in 2004, he remains subject to stringent restrictions and is unable to leave East Jerusalem or communicate with journalists or foreigners.

The ride demands complete freedom for Vanunu, for his vision of a nuclear free Middle East to be fulfilled and for an end to nuclear weapons world wide. The Freedom ride also supports, as Vanunu does, freedom and justice for the Palestininian people.

Empire as a Way of Life, Part 5

11-04-2007 12:41

Audio

The current imperial slaughter in the Middle East, justified by the "Global War on Terror", that has resulted in at least 600,000 deaths in Iraq, is nothing new — the U.S. Empire has a long and sordid history of genocidal mass murder.

The history of the U.S. imperialism and Empire is the subject of a series of ten monthly seminars from Dr John Marciano, "Empire as a Way of Life". Attached is a recording of the fifth of these seminars and the text upon which it was based. The first 7 of these seminars have taken place and the intention is to have the whole series published on this site; the last 3 will take place between now and June.

This seminar, recorded on 16th January 2007 by the L.A. Sound Posse, runs for 38 minutes and includes the discussion following. It has been made available under a Creative Commons license. If this recording is broadcast please let the L.A. Sound Posse know. This recording was originally made available on the A-Infos Radio Project site.

The following text has been reproduced here with the kind permission of Dr John Marciano and he can be contacted at johnmarciano@mac.com. He introduced this series of seminars in the following way:

A fundamental purpose of our meetings is to understand the systemic nature of the U.S. Empire and the economic and military imperialism that is its lifeblood. The historian William Appleman Williams argues that empire became "a way of life" in the U.S., a "combination of patterns of thought and action that, as it becomes habitual and institutionalized, defines the thrust and character of a culture and society." This "way of life" has convinced many U.S. "Americans" they have a right or "manifest destiny" to impose their political and economic policies upon others.

Dr John Marciano is Professor Emeritus, State University of New York at Cortland, where he taught courses on social and historical foundations of education and class, gender and race.

Who really ended slavery?

11-04-2007 08:34

200 years since the abolition of the slave trade
Who really ended slavery?

Speakers Paul Gilroy, Weyman Bennett

The 200th anniversary of the abolition of the British slave trade has rightly initiated a discussion not simply about the wrongs that slavery brought on millions of Black people, but also about its economic role and how it was abolished.

Birmingham, like many other cities, has both its heroes and villains. The supply of the manacles to the trade is a horrific memory, while those who campaigned against it are to be celebrated.

This public meeting will look at 2 critical elements.

Firstly the role that the slave trade played in financing, and providing the stimulus for, the industrial revolution. Many of the great industrialists of the time were financed by money coming directly from the slave trade.

Secondly, and an element that is far too often forgotten, the role of the slaves themselves in destroying slavery. The rebellion of the slaves in Haiti was the beginning of the end for slavery. The British dominion of Jamaica saw its own uprising by slaves. In Britain freed slaves played an important part in the campaign to abolish the trade, alongside the likes of William Wilberforce MP.

Meeting details:
Wednesday 11th April 7pm
Afro-Caribbean Millennium Centre, 339 Dudley Rd , Winson Green

Urgent Help needed for victim of trafficking and child prostitution

11-04-2007 08:19

Harriet Mutoni is the victim of trafficking and child prostitution. She was trafficked into the UK in January 2005. In March 2007 she was assessed by the Poppy Project who confirmed that her experiences are consistent with those of other victims of trafficking. If Harriet is returned to Uganda she would have no support network and would face severe circumstances, including the likelihood of being forced to return to prostitution.

Under siege, Iran ups the ante

10-04-2007 23:16

For all their apparent grandstanding, the Iranians have been rather astute in defending their legitimate right to a civilian nuclear programme and fuel cycle. By upping the ante every time they come under unreasonable pressure, they have managed to create new facts on the ground. In turn, these facts make it more difficult for Washington to achieve its goals through "peaceful" coercion such as arm-twisting Iran's negotiating partners or imposing sanctions. It is as if, having correctly read America's aggressive military intentions, Iran has decided not to give the Pentagon the luxury of choosing a time for attack best suited to itself. By inducing a premature delivery, Iran hopes the war the U.S. is planning will be stillborn.
