The Myth of Nuclear Disarmament

25-12-2006 09:19

Nuclear disarmament has become one of the most important elements of safe future and peaceful cooperation between the countries around the world. President Bush and President Vladimir V. Putin signed in 2002 the treaty that calls for each country to cut inventories to between 1,700 and 2,200 warheads by 2012.The treaty outlined the direction for further cooperation in this field, but the USA has found a loophole and are going to turn the treaty to their advantage and to use it to gain their aims.

Inanity for Xmas

25-12-2006 05:41

The arch-conservative Anglican Dean of Sydney's St. Andrews Cathedral, Phil Jensen, has delivered a Christmas message worthy of the most mindless, inane comment that the infamous neo-con war monger and lunatic Donald “uknown knowns” Rumsfeld could have delivered. The Dean stated that “Christmas is about God giving, that God gave the gift of God and the gift of God, is God," (!) Those Australians who imagined that mindless, unqualified statements only issued from American neo-cons be advised, conservative pro-American Evangelicals are alive and very ‘unwell’ in conservative Anglican Sydney.

Proposals on party funding aimed at breaking Labour-Trade Union link

24-12-2006 20:34

Labour Party activists have reacted in anger after the latest draft version of the report of the Hayden Phillips inquiry into political party funding was leaked last week. The original rumoured cap on donations of £250,000 has been dropped in favour of a new £50,000 figure. However the main target of this cap seems to be not big business but the trade unions.

Incredibly, under the terms of these draft proposals, any unions who have political funds and donate to the Labour Party will be required to register the names of all their individual members and then contact them each year to ask if they wish to continue to have that percentage of their union dues marked down as a political levy payment paid over to the party. With over three million workers potentially involved this would represent a major operation each and every year. Also, however big or small the union is, the total amount they can give will not be able to exceed £50,000. This is clearly aimed at breaking the power of the four big unions. Similar restrictions would exist with regards to affiliation payments to local parties.

Plane Stupid Newsletter #6

“This is a deeply traumatized community which has been lied to for years and years by the aviation industry and one political party after another. There is a litany of broken promises. I wonder just how you might feel if you had endured all this for years! I am so angry I am almost incandescent with rage at the immorality of it all.”

A Terrible Day for International Diplomacy

24-12-2006 16:05

This is arguably the first time in history of the Security Council that an entire nation is being punished based not on actual violations of international law, but on pure speculation on the part of some powerful countries, regarding its hypothetical future conduct. As Seymour Hersh reported in The New Yorker, both the CIA and the Israeli intelligence have been unable to substantiate any nuclear weapons program in Iran.

With the world now one full year off the Peak Oil and Gas cliff (according to work of geologists such as Kenneth Deffeyes), it is no surprise to see geostrategic tensions superheating quickly in several key oil and gas regions, as the world’s superpowers and multinational energy giants (supported by their nation’s militaries and intelligence agencies) intensify their combat over remaining energy supplies.

The German environment minister says the salt deposit in Gorleben is geologically suitable for a final nuclear waste depository but other locations will be considered.
“The findings so far about a dense rock cover and hence the barrier function of the salt were positively confirmed,” wrote the minister, Sigmar Gabriel, in response to an open letter from opponents of nuclear installations in the north German village.

Berezovsky gang caught smuggling radioactive material?

23-12-2006 21:49

Did Litvinenko and Kovtun receive the same wrong information as British detectives? That Polonium is harmless unless ingested?

"On the Health Protection Agency's website the agency says that polonium-210 is "not a radiological hazard as long as it remains outside the body" and that "most traces can be eliminated through hand-washing, washing machines and dishwasher cycles for clothes, plates, etc".
However, the only contact one of the contaminated detectives had with the poison was when he removed items such as clothing from Litvinenko's home. Evidence of the substance was reportedly found in a tea cup at the Millennium Hotel more than a month after Litvinenko was killed and countless washes. Seven bar staff who had minimal contact with Litvinenko all show evidence of exposure." - really bad advice!

Links for MI5 Research

For the second time in less than 24 hours, I try to open a bookmarked site that I'm using for some research on the 'war on terrorism', only to find that it's been taken down. Luckily, there are such things as Google Cache (Google takes a snapshot of each page it examines and caches (stores) that version as a back-up). The site this time (http://www.serve.com/pfc/misc/MI5_bibl.html) was a good collection of links on the MI5 for interested researchers. The cached version is here, but the page is also reproduced below - you know, just in case...
