Stand up for staffies!
20-08-2012 16:55
Raising public awareness of the suffering of dogs in our society - the plight of the staffie, the failings of 'BSL - breed specific legislation', greyhound racing, dog fighting, puppy farms and the use of dogs in vivisection.
This weekend just passed Derby Animal Rights did a street stall in Derby City Centre raising awareness about some of the issues surrounding dogs.
There were several campaigners on St. Peter's Street from 11am until 5pm, highlighting in particular the plight of the staffie and also the dog breeds subjected to BSL - 'breed specific legislation'. This legislation punishes breeds of dogs without looking at the root of the problem, which is irresponsible owners training 'status' dogs to be aggressive and giving breeds undeservedly bad reputations.
More than 7,000 unwanted dogs were put to sleep by local authorities in the UK last year, but the actual number of dogs put to sleep is estimated to be tens of thousands higher as there are shelters that don't have "no kill" policies. A high percentage of those that die are staffie types, as this breed in particular is being overbred and then abandoned, and due to its bad reputation the dogs struggle to find new loving homes.
One of the main messages of the day was to please adopt from a rescue centre, don't buy or breed. Also, people should think about choosing a staffie as there are so many in need of homes that would make lovely pets. The campaigners were also collecting money on the day for local dog rescue 'Just for Dogs' in Brailsford, who have a no-kill policy and do do some great work,
Lots of members of the public came over to the stall throughout the day and the petition to DEFRA asking for them to repeal BSL was filled in every available inch of space. There was massive public support for the staffie on the day and many people were very enamoured with the gentle rescue staffie girl campaigners had with them, who was saved from being put to sleep this Christmas just gone.
Other important dog-related issues on the day included raising awareness of the cruelities behind the greyhound racing industry, which results in the death of tens of thousands of innocent dogs a year, and the use of dogs in vivisection when there are numerous alternatives to animal testing that would be safer for human medicine and save so many animals from short lives of torture and misery.

Hundreds of supporters of Julian Assange gathered outside the Ecuadorian Embassy in London for Julian's first public appearance since taking refuge there and seeking asylum in Ecuador exactly two months ago. Ecuador announced its decision to grant asylum on Thursday, but the British government is petulantly refusing to do what even the most repressive government would do in similar circumstances, namely grant Julian safe passage out of the country.

Disabled Mum "too independent" claims Motability
19-08-2012 22:55
mcle and a severely disabled single mum from leeds is facing losing her children, job and even her home after government agency motability told her that the heavily adapted vehicle she relies on to get out and about makes her "too independent". kirsten battle, 38 who uses a specialist electric wheelchair qualified as the first disabled youth worker in yorkshire in 2009 has qualified for the scheme, the only one of its type in the uk, for over 20 years and was happily driving the van until this year when without warning the organisation, which is funded by disabled people who exchange their benefits for a vehicle on contract hire, suddenly wrote to her informing her that she would lose the vehicle. the organisation refuses to provide any evidence as to why this is the case. despite being asked to do so by her solicitor.
kirsten, who is recovering from major surgery, needs the vehicle to go anywhere due to the fact that she lives in a remote location which has no accessible "public" transport and no shops or services and, despite having grown up in the area is constantly abused by locals, attacks which have also been aimed at her car and home, causing major damage. these have been reported to the police and to leeds city council, both of whom have told her that "discriminative or hate orientated crime towards disabled people is perfectly legal under current legislation".
leeds city council have also told the mum of a 16 and 12 year old that the children will be taken into care if she loses the vehicle on the grounds that she would have no way to get them to school.
motability refused to comment.
