3,000 march to demand: Give Our Kids A Future!

14-08-2011 11:59

On Saturday 13th August, 3,000 people of all ages and backgrounds, mainly from Hackney and Haringey, but with additional support from all around London, marched from Gillet Square, Dalston in Hackney, to Tottenham Green in Haringey. The march was organised and publicised just 2 days before by the hastily formed North London Unity Assembly initiated mainly by Turkish organisations and the Haringey and Hackney Anti-cuts Alliances [see list of some of the supporters at the end].

The aim was to provide a united community response to the recent disturbances, especially those in Tottenham and Hackney, and to the causes of despair and frustration that can result in riots. The march was led all the way by a dozen children behind a huge 'Give Our Kids A Future!' banner, followed by a mass of placards and banners from a wide range of community groups, trades union branches and political organisations as well as hand-crafted placards from scores of individuals.

Operation Unity, Operation Britain
Citizens of Britain,

The riots that we have witnessed over the last week, whilst violent and misguided, are a product of decades of neglect inflicted on your country by various governments. We do not condone mindless thuggery, but that does not stop us from seeing the reality behind it.

Your politicians and the media do their best to avoid seeing that reality. They would rather manipulate public anger in order to cloud judgment and create division. They will use these riots as an excuse to withdraw civic freedoms, increase draconian police powers, and discourage legitimate protest. By placing their emphasis on mindless criminality, your politicians mask the extent to which a significant section of society is stuck in an impoverished way of life with little hope for the future.

Anonymous senses your displeasure and witnesses the iron fist of the state being used more and more often to put down dissent before it begins. We note also the ever increasing tide of propaganda issued to justify these repressive acts. The law is no longer the protector of the citizens but the protector of a wealthy few from the many, who have very little. Justice has become yet another commodity that only the wealthy can afford.

We sympathise with the anger that seethes under the facade of your country's diplomatic image. It is time to take a stand and realise that solutions will not be found in today's corrupt political landscape. You should seize this opportunity to rally for freedom. Anonymous stands with you in this struggle and will fight alongside you in the battle for permanent change. Let your enemies stand forewarned.

Saturday October 15th 2011 will be your opportunity for rebellion. We call on Britain to unite and organise peacefully. Unions, anti-cuts groups, community organisations, students, activists, citizens: you know your political system is not fit for purpose. Rally your supporters and stand together in holding mass protests in your major cities. Together you can send a powerful message to your government: you are the people of Britain and your voice WILL be heard.

Yours sincerely,
Operation Britain

We are Anonymous.
We are Legion.
We do not forgive.
We do not forget.
Expect us.

A Riot Laugh With The EDL!

14-08-2011 08:55

The EDL stumble embarassingly on. oh lordy!

For Sale: Flat screen TV. Slight fire damage. Offers?

Crivvens! Britain burns, Dave dithers and Boris bumbles through but luckily the English Defence League are on hand to help! Phew! It's not really been going too well for the EDL over the last few weeks what with the media fingering them over connections to Norwegian  killer Anders Breivik, the continuing fallouts with the Jewish division, the appalling attack on a takeaway joint by Plymouth EDL and the subsequent sacking of Hayley Wells as regional organ grinder which incurred the wrath of the action monkeys of the ‘Combined Ex-Forces' - regimental motto ‘Don't panic! Don't panic!' And to top it off, after various factions have been sticking their nebs in where they simply weren't wanted round ‘riot torn' Britain they ended the week with a pisspoor demo in Wellington.

Poor Do!

Considering that there has been a bit of a hoo-ha recently on Albion's fair streets, plod thought it wise to ban the EDL's Wellington march but could not refuse a static demo. Locals were grateful as the EDL bought a bunch of outsiders into town, the Telford/ Luton match was rescheduled and shops had to fork out to some dodgy company to get boarded up. In case you don't know, a static demo is when the EDL arrive in a town where they are not wanted  armed with carrier bags of Stella to stand in a carpark with no toilets for an hour or two. After shouting a bit and getting out of hand, which the stewards always fail to deal with, plod then escorts them back to their coaches and they are told to go away. This is how ‘Islamic extremism' has been successfully defeated by the EDL. Not really. At Wellington a diminished EDL stood cluelessly about getting more and more irate then, after chucking bottles at plod, some clever fellow attempted to get in the dog van! Why? As Rochdale  proved plod dogs love the taste of EDLers - apparently they're like kebabs! As usual, the EDL couldn't help themselves and after a wee bit of argy bargy there were 5 nickings, the silly Billies! As usual the stewards lost control and one female steward ‘scratched the life out of' another member. As usual, it  also kicked off a bit on the train station when plod dished up Section 60s which mean ‘bugger off now, we've had enough!' and there may also have been arrests at Birmingham train station when the Stella and Charlie relationship (the EDL's royal couple) fully blossomed. Jeff ‘Stabber' Marsh is currently seething and posting frenzied rebuttals to the scant press reports of the day on his website. Help Ma Boab!

It's been a bit of week for ‘Cocaine' Kev Carol, de facto EDL leader now that Tommy has to be in bed by 7. ‘Sir' Tommy Robinson is currently under bail restrictions so cannot attend demos - though this did not stop him from appearing on Newsnight for some reason - and Cocaine Kev is now calling the shots. He turned up at the London trial of 3 brave EDL warriors who had been arrested for attacking ‘Muslamics' at Speakers Corner. So much for defending free speech then lads? 1 EDL had also grabbed a policeman's genitals! Really! There are better ways of asking for dates you know! At Wellington the cocaine cowboy praised the father of one of the 3 guys who had been killed last week for being a ‘good Muslim' and held a minute's silence. Apparently South Yorkshire also tried to organise a flash demo yesterday in solidarity as but they didn't get up in time. Shame.

A Bunch of Posses!

The EDL have also been making a perfect nuisance of themselves following last week's interruptions to the weekly shop. In Eltham a bunch of ‘middle aged men' - who surely should know better - ended up chanting EDL slogans and fighting with plod. Locals claimed that these characters were outsiders and were not welcome especially after they attacked a bus with some black lads on it and members of the EDL Facebook pages were calling for some ‘nig bashing.' How 70s! The EDL have claimed that these chaps weren't members but seeing as how there is no formal membership scheme anyone who says they are EDL is therefore EDL no matter how many times Kev and Tommy deny it. David Cameron condemned the EDL this week by calling them ‘sick' and the EDL have finally got round to issuing a statement on it. It makes for dull reading. In Enfield, an EDL vigilante posse turned up to be roundly condemned by plod for drinking too much and getting in the way of things. Manchester EDL made a half-arsed attempt to do something but then didn't. The EDL also claimed to have swept the streets of Cambridge clear of Brigands and then indulged in their favourite pastime of intimidating takeaway joints (like in Plymouth and Leicester).

Following the attack on the Plymouth takeaway 2 weeks back, Hayley Wells was removed as regional organiser for her part in the incident. The EDL leadership of course denied they had anything to do with it but seeing at it was caused by the Plymouth EDL after a Plymouth EDL meet and greet then it was Plymouth EDL wot done it! Hayley got a bit of a Facebook bollocking of Ma Wells for drinking and fighting instead of looking after her children. Hayley's fiancé is Michael Rafferty, ‘commander' of the Combined ex-Forces group (they love their little titles don't they?) and he waltzed off in a tizz after Tommy slagged them all  off and they are no longer friends. Hayley ran the EDL Extra on Facebook and she is currently having a pram war with Hel Gower (Tommy's PA & known fascist) and the toys are flying about! The Combined exForces also features our old mate Billy ‘Bunter' Baker of the English Nationalists Association -hello Chubs, how's the diet? - and they are threatening to march on Downing Street on September 3rd. I may be wrong but the only ‘forces' Bunter Baker has experienced is when he forces another pasty into his toothless maw. The 3rd is also the date of the Tower Hamlets do which Tommy has promised is going to be a ‘bloodbath.' Yes, but for who?

The EDL have been invited to a Peterborough mosque to discuss issues but we will not be holding our breath. The EDL will not publicly debate with muslims for 3 reasons: that many of the EDL's arguments are flawed and do not stand up to scrutiny; that the leadership have no one left who is articulate enough to debate in public; and they are unable to distinguish between moderate Muslims and the tiny percentage of Islamic extremists in the UK - as demonstrated by them singing ‘Mohammed /Allah is a pedo' and assuming ‘moderate Muslims' will not mind. So all in all a pretty terrible couple of weeks for the EDL: Norway, the Jewish division problems, numerous fallouts, being slagged in Parliament by Mr Dave and ever diminishing demos. Shame. See you on the 3rd!

UG#563 - Extended Childhood and The New World Religion (Deschooling Society 2-3)

14-08-2011 06:08

Audio
This week we pick up with both recordings from last week, focussing on the establishment of what in our second hour, Ivan Illich calls the 'New World Religion', the cult of mass compulsion schooling. As Gatto explains, in the 20th Century, mass compulsion schooling served to create the most essential resource of all for US big business - a stockpile of radically incomplete, childish adults who could be counted on to mass produced and mass consume goods and services according to a schedule imposed by managers. Illich broadens the discussion beyond merely business and adds historical perspective.

Notts Uncut: Tour of Tax Avoiders

14-08-2011 01:55

Saturday August 13, 2011

In the aftermath of the riots in Nottingham, folks from Notts Uncut resumed their usual Saturday afternoon activities.

Protesting outside Vodafone in Clumber Street, the shop closed its shutter. Outside protesters exhorted them to mitigate the cuts by paying their fair share of taxes.

Then onto the NatWest Bank in Market Square, the bank closed its doors after people entered, chanting slogans. There were a couple of proper coppers in the bank with them, but inspite of the recent events, there were still 10 PCSO's available to stand about outside and another half-dozen still cruising around the square.  Oh.... and the recent addition of a Nottinghsmshire Police detective to monitor the situation.

Then onto another Phil Green business, TopShop in Lister Gate.  Some shoppers in need of some urgent clothes did remonstrate with those protesting, and heated discussions ensued.  A passing zebra was also press-ganged into the event :-) I thought it had a cute smile.

Onwards to Boots in the Broadmarsh were some lept under the shutters as they were being closed. After a bit of pushing and shoving, police assisted in their removal.

Notts Uncut said:

"Notts Uncut will be coming together again to remind the tax avoiding banks and corporations based in Nottingham that we haven't gone away and we haven't forgotten what they're up to.

While the Con-Dem government is getting increasingly cut-happy, telling us that there is no money for homeless shelters and women's refuges, that we can't afford to give charities government grants, that students must pay £9000 a year for degree courses, that people living on the breadline must survive on less and less there is a select group of people who are not suffering from the cuts - the bankers and corporate fat cats. While ordinary people are suffering these people are still paying multi million pounds worth of bonuses and avoiding billions of pounds worth of tax. Let's get out there and make sure the government and their super wealthy tax dodging mates know that we're onto them!!"

2000 joined unity march "give our kids a future"

13-08-2011 21:55

around 2000 people joined an assembly in dalston this afternoon, before marching north to tottenham for a rally outside the town hall

----

the event was called by the 'north london unity assembly' which brought together more than 70 local community leaders and groups under the banner "give our kids a future".

crowds assembled at gilet square in dalston, where they heard from an array of speakers. links were made between austerity cuts, deprivation, inflexible narrow education, poor employment prospects and other ills of capitalism. some speakers highlighted the hypocricy of MPs calling for the sternest response to riots, while walking free from the expenses scandals. others highlighted the billions lost to bankers who truly looted the country, and yet are still pocketing their unfeasible bonuses. the excessive use of stop and search by police was blamed for alienating young people, and of course the IPCC was castigated for its total lack of independence, with hundreds of deaths at police hands and not one single conviction, and the lies unravelling over the death of mark duggan.

as the march walked the four mile route up to tottenham, police (mostly from outside forces) provided a low key accompaniment, but half a dozen riot vans were never far away in the back streets. whether through bad planning or a more sinister motive, vehicles were allowed through as the march travelled through the one-way high street in stoke newington, mingling with the crowd further up the road.

although the gathering was generally very good-natured and peaceful, some people questioned why a female police officer was videoing the crowd - her response was that she was only doing her job.

at the final rally outside the tottenham town hall, there was an open microphone, giving dozens of people the opportunity to address the crowd for two minutes each. again, the police screwed up allowing some vehicles to come up the road and through the crowd, until one speaker shamed them into joining legal observers who were trying to redirect the traffic around the demo.

when i left at around 4.30, there were still a few hundred people listening to speakers

An open letter to those who condemn looting (Part two)

13-08-2011 19:52

First, this recurrent accusation of "materialistic" signals a broader refusal not of consumerism - with which you are well familiar and for which you cheerlead full-throated - but of the material fact of social disruption. To speak, with disdain, at the materialistic nature of these days is to speak, beneath your tongue, of a desire that people should go back to "protesting" in ways that remain representational: be counted, be seen, be ignored, go back to the places they live, remain there. It marks your horror at what it looks like for "protest" to become material, and, at that point, no longer protest.

An open letter to those who condemn looting (Part one)

13-08-2011 19:48

Dear you all,

I fear we have nothing to say to each other.

What follows may therefore represent one half of a dialogue in the way that yelling at a jukebox made of ice does. Perhaps the sheer exertion of speaking - a certain quantity of hot air - will soften the surface a bit, but it's a pretty one-sided discussion. And it doesn't mean you can or will stop repeating the records you have been given to play, those looping phrases and evasions.

This Mob Justice Has to Stop

13-08-2011 17:36

Gloating Manchester Police

This is mob justice and it has to stop.

People are angry, frightened, confused – it is not surprising that strong, authoritarian gestures seem appealing.

Whatever one thinks of the British police – a subject to which I will return – you cannot deny that as people they have been under unimaginable pressure in recent days, working in frightening and dangerous circumstances. It is perfectly understandable that individual officers will feel triumphant when another person is sentenced. But this does not excuse the crowing tone of such messages. This is neither professional nor reassuring. Quite the opposite. This has the air of a lynch mob.
