Philippine Government Has Failed to Address Poverty in its First Year in Office

11-04-2011 15:32

The latest Social Weather Station (SWS) survey showing an increase in hunger is a major concern that must be taken seriously and not brushed off in a squabble over statistics. According to the March 4-7 poll 20.5% of respondents -- or an estimated 4.1 million families -- have gone hungry at least once in the past three months. This is up from the estimated 3.4 million families recorded in November 2010, i.e., almost one million extra families are going hungry today due to poverty. Along with the other examples of poverty and marginalization – such as the shocking deaths of up to 30 people in Palawan, including children, due to easily preventable ailments such as diarrhea – this demonstrates that the situation of the masses is deteriorating.

Wind and wave farms could affect Earth's energy balance

11-04-2011 10:48

"Studies] yield maximum estimates in the range of 17–38 TW and are notably less than recent estimates that claim abundant wind power availability. Furthermore, we show with the climate model simulations that the climatic effects at maximum wind power extraction are similar in magnitude to those associated with a doubling of atmospheric CO2. " - Miller, Gans and Kleidon (2011): "Estimating maximum global land surface wind power extractability and associated climatic consequences"

ACTIVISTS BLOCKADE QUEEN’S BACK YARD TO BRAND ENERGY GIANT’S NUCLEAR POWER BID A ‘RIGHT ROYAL RIP-OFF’

Photos available soon at:  http://www.flickr.com/photos/mini_mouse/5592365881/

Campaigners brought rush hour traffic to a standstill this morning to protest against EDF Energy’s plans to build a new generation of nuclear power stations in the UK. All four lanes of the A302 outside EDF Energy’s headquarters in Grosvenor Place – which runs alongside the gardens of Buckingham Palace – were sealed off shortly after 8am using 14-foot tripods. Support The Fortnum 145

11-04-2011 07:23

The Fortnum 145 are a group of people who were arrested and charged, following the occupation of Fortnum and Mason on 26 March this year.

So far, they’ve been part shocked, part amused, by the awful media coverage of the events of that day. Media spin about violence and attacks has been undermined by footage actually taken inside the store. The mass arrest happened amidst calls for the police to be given more rights spy on protesters. The police have even told parliament that this was an opportunity to gather intelligence about protestors. This is political policing, clear and simple.

The linked website exists to support the protesters who campaigned to highlight the tax dodge of over £40 million by Associated British Foods which is majority-owned by Fortnum & Mason’s owner Whittington Investments.

We’ll be featuring blogs from the protesters and other people, media from the day and the trials ahead and putting forward ideas about how you can help.

Right now, it’d be a big help for you to have a look at our action page and spread the message about our campaign.

We’re also keen to hear your messages of support and we have a form that helps you to get in touch to give us a morale-boost.
