St Pancras out of control

31-10-2010 16:22

The demonstration eventually made it to Kings Cross, and it quickly moved into the Eurostar terminal. It kept moving around the terminal until it eventually made its way to the check-in desks and border control. A group of people managed to go throgh the check in and into the border area, which provoked a quick, and quite freaked-out, response from the security personnel. After a while people decided to leave the terminal in a group, at which point the Transport Police turned up. One protestor got arrested.

Critical spook bike ride

31-10-2010 14:23

The critical mass in Leeds celebrated Halloween on Friday.  The monthly celebration of cycling round had a good number of cyclists who braved the mass of cars to make a mass of bicycles.  The atmosphere was friendly with a few drivers asking, "What are you protesting about?", to which the mass replied that we were just riding our bikes.

Vodafone actions across UK

31-10-2010 13:25

On Wednesday, activists in London blockaded Vodafone's flagship store on Oxford Street, in protest against the company's avoidance of a £6bn tax bill. This action has inspired campaigners throughout the country and sparked off a wave of anti-Vodafone actions. But nothing yet in Nottingham.

On Thursday, campaigners in Leeds managed to shutdown all 3 of the company's stores in the city. On Saturday, a day of action saw stores targetted across the UK including Glasgow, Edinburgh, central London, Brixton, Hastings, Manchester, Worthing, Bristol and Brighton.

Vodafone has been targetted after it emerged that an agreement reached with Her Majesty' Revenue and Customs (HMRC) had allowed the company to avoid a tax bill, which Private Eye estimates is around £6bn, which could go a long way to defraying the £7bn benefits cuts pushed by the coalition govenment.

Even if the £6n figure is a vast overestimate, this doesn't get them off the hook, the company has admitted in its annual report that it had provisioned against £2.2 billion "in respect of the potential UK corporation tax exposure" at 31st March 2010, suggesting that even they think the £1.25bn they've agreed to pay is a vast underestimate.

So far, despite a burgeoning anti-cuts movement in the city, Vodafone hasn't received any hassle in Nottingham, which is a surprise as protesters are hardly short of targets. Nottingham has 3 Vodafone stores:

  • Ground Floor Unit 43 No 156 The Victoria Centre Nottingham, NG1 3QF
  • "Nottingham Experience," 8-10 Clumber Street, Nottingham, NG1 3GA
  • 2-4 Albert Street (opposite St Peter's Church), Nottingham, NG1 7DA

Elsewhere in Nottinghamshire, there are further 2 stores:

  • Worksop, 68 Bridge Place, Worksop, S80 1J
  • Mansfield, 44 The Square (unit 47). Four Seasons Centre, Mansfield, NG18 1SU

Let's not let the bastards think they've got away easy here. We are currently witnessing an assault on the poorest and most vulnerable sections of our society, waged by a government of public schoolboys and millionaires who are at the same time giving their millionaire buddies get tax breaks. They only call it class war when we fight back. So what are we waiting for?

31-10-2010 11:32

The time seems ripe for a broadly-backed effort to introduce partial direct democracy in the UK and its countries.

Moving our countries, cities, towns and districts towards real "democracy-by-the-people" is not a party-political issue.

America threatens Iran: The anti-war movement's trojan horse

31-10-2010 10:30

After a period in which defending Iran hasn't been very high on the agenda of most U.S. anti-war activists, there are now two petition campaigns opposing war and sanctions against Iran.

One effort is led by a New York City-based organization more known for defending Cuban “dissidents” who openly take U.S. money to try to undermine the Cuban Revolution. The other was launched by an independent Tehran-based organization formed to promote Iranian solidarity with Cuba, Venezuela and other progressive countries in Latin America.

Curiously, it's the first campaign that seems to be getting the most support.

As part of the UK Uncut day of action against the cuts, York activists took to the streets today to close down not one, but eventually two Vodafone stores. Demo Connecting Border Regime & Surveillance: pics

31-10-2010 00:22

Following a call from London NoBorders, a second 'Life Is Too Short To Be Controlled' demonstration started in Piccadilly Circus this afternoon. Around fifty people gathered under the constant sight of hundreds of CCTV cameras to "connect two locations in London which are symbolic places of both the border regime and surveillance". After a cuple of speeches, people started marching through central London streets all the way to Kings Cross' Eurostar terminal. The sound-sytem kept playing tunes for the while journey and the crowd sticked together throughout, even though several cars - specially taxi-drivers - tried to drive through the demonstration several times. Police weren't on sight for the whole time.

Here there are some pics ...

Brixton Anti-Cuts March & Vodafone Protest

30-10-2010 23:22

The march and rally that took place in Brixton to protest about the imminient cuts in social spending attracted around 200 local people. At midday the rally strated at the Brixton Oval, where representatives from Lambeth Save Our Services, Lambeth Pensioners Group, the local branches of UNISON, GMB, NUT and UCU unions, and workers from the Lambeth One O'clock Clubs gave speeches about how the imposed cuts will be afecting the local sercvices. Then, a rather ritualistic march started around central Brixton and into the market area, to end back at the Oval. It wasn't exactly an expression of anger as seen in onther parts of Europe, but it may, at least, represent the start of a local mobilisation.

Once the march ended, and as part of a UK-wide campaign,  a group of people made its way to the Vodafone store right next to Brixton tube station to protest against the company's avoidance of a £6bn tax bill, effectively shutting it down for most of the afternoon. See pics below ...
