The first hour features a presentation from last month by Nicholas Carr, author of "Is The Internet Making Us Stupid?", introduced by an essay from Steve Talbott, "Multitasking Ourselves to Death". We conclude with a few minutes of history from the great techno-sceptic, Ivan Illich, followed by a speech from Heather Menzies, author of "No Time, Stress, and the Crisis of Modern Life".

We Need Your Support!

28-08-2010 07:22

Support people powered media of media-for-money; here's how you can help...
With recent reports that media-mogul Rupert Murdoch (owner of The Times, The Sun, Sky TV and much, much more) is getting 'too powerful' resonating in the media, it recently emerged that his US news arm, Fox News, gave $1,000,000 to the Republican party. Here in Bristol, one company has a virtual stranglehold on print media, owning the Evening Post, Western Daily Press, Clifton Chronicle, Venue and many more South West newspapers; the Daily Mail Group. It is planning an expansion of it's online news coverage in Bristol. The Daily Mail Group competes with the Tindle Newspapers Ltd and Newsquest. Newsquest are in turn owned by Gannett, a giant US media corporation owning hundreds of newspapers, which has been accused of being anti-union. Tindle Newspapers Ltd itself made news during the Iraq war when it's owner, Sir Ray Tindle, declared that none of his titles should cover anti-war protests - at a stroke deciding what people should and should not know. Are these the multi-millionaires and multi-multi million valued companies ho we should be trusting to inform us of how the austerity cuts will impact us? Or how the war in Afghanistan is going? Or of the real state of our communities and environment?

By contrast, Bristol Indymedia is financed 100% by donations from people like you! We have no advertising, do not change any fees for the use of the site, do not get money from grants or funds. All our work is carried out by volunteers. This means we are financially independent from any pressure; it also means we need your help to keep the site running. We've got a limited run of t-shirts for sale for £10 and 100% of the proceeds of which will go to pay for our servers, publicity material and to finance our outreach events. Stick one in the eye of the media billionaires - and support a more democratic vision of media... buy a t-shirt, donate us some cash, give us a small donation monthly and/or get involved!

Dear friends of justice

27-08-2010 18:40

"Iraq and Afghanistan are U.S. imperial wars. Imperialism means simply invading other people’s homelands and killing them in order to secure something that our rulers want. This is how they are “removed,” or otherwise encouraged to get the hell out of the way. This is the “mission” of the troops. Forget “Democracy,” liberation, “nation building,” bravery, heroes, anything you hear from the talking head “experts” you may have heard on some NPR talk show, or any other pretty words on the subject."
