Kick Israel out of European football

25-06-2010 09:38

Israel’s New Humanitarianism
Time to kick Israel out of European football ...... “The lesson of South Africa is that the sports boycott helped change the old politics.” – Jim Murphy, Labour MP for East Renfrewshire. “It is a question of boycotting racism, not sport, precisely in order to restore to sport all the magnanimity of its first purpose.” – Amadou Mahtar-M’Bow, Director -General of UNESCO to the International Conference on Sports Boycott Against South Africa in 1985. “The sights in the territories even turn the stomach of someone who grew up under apartheid. The occupation reminds me of the darkest days of apartheid, but we never saw tanks and planes firing at a civilian population. It’s a monstrousness I’d never seen before.” – Ronnie Kasrils, South Africa’s minister for intelligence services in 2007.

edo trial update

24-06-2010 19:22

Update, and way to be informed of the verdict
The trial of the decommissioners has now entered its third week and is moving along at a brisk pace. Originally scheduled to run for 10 weeks, then cut to 7, it now seems likely that it will conclude around the middle of next week. Some highlights of the case so far include the five-day-long cross examining of EDO's managing Director Paul Hills about his company's business weapon deals, and the early aquittal of one of the defendants after a submission by the defence that she had 'no case to answer' after the prosecution failed to present the jury with any strong evidence against her. At the moment the jury has heard evidence from most of the defendants and are being presented with evidence from Palestine, highlighting the war crimes that have been committed there.

So far so good...However, it's not over yet and the defendants still need your support! There is a vigil every day outside Hove Crown Court from around 9.45am. Everybody welcome both outside and inside court.

There is a demonstration planned for the day of the verdict, whatever the outcome. It will most likely take place at very short notice. If you want to know the outcome of the trial and come to the demo, please email your mobile phone number to smashedo@riseup.net as soon as possible. You will then be sent a text when the jury goes out and another once the verdict is announced, with demo details.

As you may have noticed, we have all been very busy during the trial period and have been bad at posting updates about how it is going...so, if you come to court and feel like writing about what's going on please feel free to send your impressions to Smash EDO's email and we can keep people informed. In the meantime, here is a link to a piece which has been written already:

The Smartest Guys in the Room

24-06-2010 18:22

The East Bristol Debt Alliance (EBDA) invites you to a vegan meal and film show at Kebele Social Centre this Sunday .
Dinner is served @ 6.30 pm

EBDA offers debt advice and help to deal with debt collection agencies and with bailiffs. The drop in is every 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month at Kebele Social Centre, 14 Robertson Road Easton from 7pm - 9pm.

The banking fiasco of the last few years shows how corrupted the current economic system is. Now, as this week's budget shows, the government is trying to force ordinary folk to pay the price for the so called mistakes of the most rich and powerful.

Enron: the smartest guys in the room looks at the sub-culture of corporatism manifested in the manipulation of the energy markets resulting in a massive fraud that benefited a few chief executives while it destroyed the lives of the company employees.

This film is a must for all anti-capitalists and for those who are tired of being exploited by unscrupulous traders.

Film begins @ around 8pm
