BCC Tree Surgeons Use Our Council Tax To Decimate Hundreds of Bristol's Trees
27-05-2010 23:22
hundreds of mature street trees in Bristol have been hoplessly over-pruned in the Autumn and now appear to be dyingThe Evening Post Front Page Picture Story That Never Was..............
I'm no expert but it's nearly the end of May and these heavily over pruned trees have not managed to produce anything like enough leaves this years to survive!
These trees are on Whiteladies Road and Cranbrook Road.
The Whiteladies Road Plane Trees are in a reall terrible state and look to me like they may not survive??
But there are many more on Fishponds Road and elswhere throughout the city.
Maybe a dodgy sub-contractor has been employed to prune these trees because their managers clearly know next to nothing about arboriculture. Might they have somehow cheated in the awarding of the contract? Maybe with help from their 'friends' who are council officers responsible for oversight of tendering process?
In the good old days the council would have done this work themselves and the people involved would have been caring, knowledgable and accountable.
Nowadays these sub contractors and the council hide under the cover of 'commercial confidentiality' we all know what that means.
"I have made a pact not to grass up my friends. "
I suppose the contractors have been paid now for a 'job well done'?
Will Bristol City Couuncil's Head of Legal Services Stephen Macnamara be able to get this money back for us?
Or is he too busy struggling to justify making such a diabolical mess, as the city's returning officer, of the recent general and local elections?
Or is he too busy trying to justify the continuing suspension of our honest Bristol Coroner Paul Forrest, for doing nothing more than speaking out early in 2009 about dead bodies piling up at Southmead Hospital awaiting inquests?

IT’S THE TORIES, STUPID!
We are in the midst of the worst worldwide crisis of capitalism for 80 years, the Conservatives are back in Downing Street and the so called Liberal Democrats have shown their true colours by making a grab for power at any cost. Our new leaders are promising deep cuts in services and spending to keep the ruling classes afloat. This will impoverish Britain’s working class in the same way as the last time the Tories were in power! From fear of terrorism to fear of immigrants, they are using every trick in the book to keep us in line.
A TRUE COALITION
Bristol Anarchist Bookfair is the South-West’s biggest radical event and we need you. If you are a part of an activist group, campaign group, art group, book or merchandise distributor, and you organise along Anarchist principles, we want you there. Our booking form is available from the top right-hand corner of the website.
As always table hire is cheap and room hire for talks, workshops and films is completely free.
Last year we estimated well over 600 people came through the doors and this year we are situated on one of Bristol’s busiest streets in the city’s alternative hub. So don’t miss out!
THE VENUE
Abandoned for years, this former office block is now home to a cafe/bar, dance and art studios and events spaces. This is Bristol Anarchist Bookfair’s largest venue yet. Spread over two floors we have room for a café and social area, a crèche and three meeting/film rooms. The venue is completely accessible with a lift and plenty of space between stalls.
Hamilton House is situated on Stokes Croft, the “Cultural Quarter” of Bristol. It is famed for its street art, music scene and many nearby autonomous spaces including the volunteer run Cube microplex the anarchist-run Freeshop, Emporium Art Gallery, Magpie Gallery and the newly opened “Factory” Social Centre. Stokes croft recently hit the headlines when anti-capitalist protesters disrupted plans to open a new Tesco store nearby, by converting the proposed site into a squat and live music venue, culminating in activists clashing with bailiffs and cops in what local media dubbed “The Battle of Stokes Croft”.
CHANGE REALLY IS POSSIBLE
Over thirty stalls, workshops, debates, films and a café. Extensive selections of books, pamphlets, mags & zines, info, music, badges & merchandise. The future is not set in stone, change is always possible. Anarchists believe the basis for the future can be found in co-operation, solidarity, direct action, creativity, resistance & mutual aid. Come and see what we have to offer, you only have to step through the door…

27-05-2010 09:22
Developer has appealed against Bristol Council's refusal to grant planning permissionW4B Energy intend to build a 50MW power station in Avonmouth Docks. It will burn 90,000 tonnes of palm oil per year to generate so-called renewable electricity. Bristol Council refused planning permission in February agreeing with campaigners that fuel imported from Asia and South America cannot be sustainable - particularly when industrial scale palm oil plantations are one of the major causes of deforestation and habitat destruction.
Robert Palgrave writes: W4B has appealed the refusal and a planning inspector will now make the final decision. A public inquiry later this year - date to be announced - will hear arguments from both sides. Written comments are now being taken, with a closing date of 2 June.
Although Bristol Council refused permission because they view this use of biofuel as unsustainable, there are other valid reasons for refusing permission, including local air quality impacts. It is important that these other reasons are put forward in objections sent to the Planning Inspector.
W4B have tried to head off concerns about their proposed development by suggesting that they will only use palm oil for a short period until jatropha oil is available in commercial quantities. Currently palm oil is considerably cheaper than jatropha, and Biofuelwatch see no reason to think that jatropha will ever be competitive on the global markets. Jatropha grown on an industrial scale has many adverse social and environmental impacts and uses even more land area than palm oil.
The Biofuelwatch website (www.biofuelwatch.org.uk) has more background and details on how to submit comments to the planning inspector. THE DEADLINE IS 2 JUNE. If you have any questions regarding responses to the appeal or if you want to do more to help us fight the appeal, please email us at info@biofuelwatch.org.uk.
