Vestas claim they are 'Number 1. in Modern Energy', and indeed are responsible for developing and installing much of the world's wind/renewable energy. However, they've shown their true colours (not so 'green' after all) this summer - through closing their St. Cross Business Park, Dodnor Lane, Newport, Isle of Wight factory, leading to the loss of 600 jobs. Unions were banned & working conditions deteriorating prior to closure, & 11 workers who occupied the factory to save it have been paid no redundancy. There will be a long-term campaign as a result. Will it effect Vestas Share Price? Watch This Space:  http://uk.finance.yahoo.com/q?s=VWS.CO

Griffin the goldfish and the matter of animal abuse at fairs

04-10-2009 19:29

Bruise
Every year in Evesham we are subjected to something called the “Mop” Fair which turns the town into a hive of debauchery, noise , disruption and bright fairground rides. Advocates of the Mop like upholding the tradition which goes back centuries when slaves were punished as part of the entertainment and others held up their mops in the hope that someone might employ them so you get the idea that this is not something altogether charming . People put up with it because others enjoy themselves but there is always an air of menace which gets worse year on year along with the rudeness of the fair staff who strut around like they own the place. We decided to have a peek a) because it is right next door b) because there was a rumour that goldfish were being given away as prizes.

Syrian-Kurdish protest outside Downing Street yesterday

04-10-2009 18:42

London's Parliament-White Hall area was yesterday packed with all kind of demonstrations. One of them, opposite Downing Street, was by Syrian-Kurds protesting against the Syrian government's continued discriminatory policies against the Kurds. The demo was in commemoration of the 1962 exceptional census, which stripped over 20 percent of the Kurdish population off their citizenship. As a result, over 500,000 are still 'alien' in their own country, without any rights whatsoever. Yet, the Home Office insists that such discrimination experienced by Syrian Kurds does not amount to persecution or breach of their human rights and, thus, continues to deport Kurds back to Syria.

Protesters held banners demanding the release of political prisoners and denouncing legislative decree no. 49 (Sep 2008), which effectively tied dealing in property in border regions, particularly Kurdish areas, with a requirement to get permission from security services. As usual, the demonstration was penned in by police - although this time, the pen was significantly large for the number of demonstrators attending.
