iraqi asylum seekers claim refuge in church in denmark

Around 60-70 Iraqi’s have sought refuge in a church in Copenhagen, after the Danish government finalised plans to forcefully deport around 280 people to Iraq despite the country’s instability and objections from UNHCR.

71 arrested in Copenhagen resisting the World Business Summit on Climate Change

Clashing
Protesters clashed with police in Copenhagen this weekend while attempting to disrupt the World Business Summit on Climate Change, a gathering of the worlds largest corporations and, not coincidentally, biggest polluters. Organized by the Danish government, the Business Summit gave corporate interests unprecedented access to the ongoing UN climate talks, including face time with UN General Secretary Ban Ki-moon and so called climate “hero” Al Gore.

The government has unveiled plans that will require Internet Service Providers to track all our emails, calls, texts, internet use and so on. There is currently a consultation on these plans - or should I say "plan", as there is only 1 option given.This is an immense infringement of civil liberties, not to mention a major risk to our private data - but it won't make us any safer.

UN concealed carnage to keep Sri Lanka goodwill

Despite massive international pressure, on Wed 27th May, the United Nations Human Rights Council refused calls to investigate allegations of war crimes by both sides. Instead it supported Sri Lanka in handling the humanitarian crisis under it's own initiative. The session had been called because of alarm over the high number of civilian casualties as well as the island's treatment of displaced Tamil civilians. The call by UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay for aid agencies to be given free access to the camps so they can provide the Tamils with critical relief was also not agreed upon.

Workers' Fightback: Update 4

Workers at the Swansea Linamar car parts plant have voted for an all-out indefinite strike, in support of their sacked union convenor Rob Williams. Williams was originally sacked one month ago, after an “irretrievable breakdown of trust” with management – i.e. he actually tried to stand up for his fellow workers. Indeed in April he visited all three Visteon occupations (like Linamar, Visteon are strongly linked to Ford).
