Utterly Powerless - how the nuclear industry wants us

05-02-2009 20:03

Blind Mice
We have the nuclear industry to thank for the ‘new planning regime’ which aims to sweep aside democracy and any hard won safeguards along with it.
This is a result of successful lobbying by the nuclear industry and will have an impact in Cumbria and the rest of the UK far exceeding the dismal prospect of new homes built on flood plains.

Affectionate racism?

05-02-2009 19:34

Having flicked on the TV over breakfast this morning, I was subjected to the somewhat absurd spectacle of BBC 1 controller Jay Hunt debating the meaning of the word "golliwog", and whether or not it's racist, with the morning news presenters.T he reason for this, of course, was the row over Carol Thatcher's sacking from The One Show for using the word to describe a black tennis player off-air. Hunt pulled out the dictionary definition, which was similar to this definition I just found online – "A doll fashioned in grotesque caricature of a Black male", so any argument for it not being racist was quickly put to bed (and if you want any further evidence, the fourth Google result for "golliwog" involves the BNP trying to argue that banning golliwog dolls is political correctness gone mad).

Manchester airport: emissions cleared for take-off

05-02-2009 19:26

Manchester City Council announced their 'Call to Action' on climate change last month, which plans to reduce the City's emissions by one third by 2020. Great! we thought: the Council owns 55% of Manchester Airport Group (MAG), so surely this 'Call to Action' would see the Airport's emissions reduce as well? Alas no: the Council simply washed their hands of this issue.

Change? Or Just Charisma

05-02-2009 15:41

Lest one tallies up its achievements, of the 1330 dead Palestinians: 437 children, 110 women, 123 elderly men, 14 medics and 4 journalists. 5000 injured, of which 1890 are children. An estimated destruction worth $ 1.5 billion, the use of white phosphorous and other illegal weapons, and over 1.5 million horrific stories to listen to. Only the sadistic fascist type would later bathe in self-exuberance by calling this a ``success''. Yet in Israeli politics, launching the all-out war machine and destroying the lives of innocents in the name of `security' to gain or retain votes isn't new.
