* Sunday 22nd Febraury : BONUS FOR IRENE by Helke Sander, 1971

A BONUS FOR IRENE (EINE PRÄMIE FÜR IRENE)
1971, DVD, 60 min, b/w, German with English subtitles
DIR Helke Sander; CAST Gundula Schroeder, Sarah Schumann, Helga Foster

A BONUS FOR IRENE portrays the hardships of a single working mother with two children. Her encounters with men are more than disappointing, they are in control of the factory, their workplace, but weak, boring, and clueless when it comes to women. “Women workers unite”, seems to be the theme of this film, one of the earliest German feminist documents.

Helke Sander was born in Berlin in 1937. From 1966 to 1969, she studied at the newly founded Deutsche Film und Fernsehakademie in Berlin. An active feminist, Sander’s work is very closely linked to her political commitment. Her films include BREAK THE POWER OF THE MANIPULATORS (1968), A BONUS FOR IRENE (1971), THE TROUBLE WITH LOVE (1983), LIBERATORS TAKE LIBERTIES (1991), and IN THE MIDDLE OF MALESTREAM (2005).

We will also be showing three early Helke Sander short films. Sander's films are hardly ever shown anywhere, so we are happy to put some of them on for free.
