Zapatista solidarity protests at Edinburgh, Bournemouth and European Airports

24-08-2008 09:25

Zapatista solidarity protest at Edinburgh Airport
Passengers hurrying into the main check-in at Edinburgh international airport on 22 August were greeted by an unusual sight. A massive banner proclaimed: “ MEXICO ...Sun…Fun…bloomin’ nice beaches…”, alongside a painting of a palm tree. A somewhat eccentric Mexican tourist board initiative perhaps?
Not exactly. “Torture….Death Squads…Human Rights Breaches…” continued the lower half of the banner, with a carefully painted AK47 illustrating the point.

Amadeu Casellas, 64 days hungerstrike - a "not political enough" prisoner.

23-08-2008 19:04

Amadeu Casellas has been imprisoned since 1986 for taking part in armed robberies of banks in which no person was shot or physically injured. Previous to that he had been imprisoned during the dictatorship. In total almost 30 years of his life have been spent in jail. It was in jail that he contracted HIV in 2000. It is in jail that he has consistenly revindicated his anarchist philosophy known to many since the group he formed part of in 1973 distributed the money they robbed amongst tenants in danger of eviction.

His case as a political prisoner is clear & the contrasts between his hungerstrike against unconstitutionally continued detention & those of more "political" prisoners in the recent history of the Spanish state is stark.

In the Name of Decency, Compassion & Higher Justice: Allow American War Resister

23-08-2008 14:01

I am beginning to feel like the Government of Canada is
attempting to adopt an ideology as our national identity and I am very
disturbed by that. I feel that some of your policies are beginning to depart
from deeply held traditional Canadian values. And you are transforming the
face of Canada with the mandate of a minority Government. You also have a
majority in the House of Commons who voted, on behalf of Canadians, to
support the request made by American War resisters to remain in Canada.

Extract from work in progress

23-08-2008 13:31

It may be difficult to define or describe what one means by the state but, as one becomes aware of the inherent cruelty with which it functions it may be more a matter of feeling what we mean by the state as well as perhaps attempting one’s own definition. I often feel people seldom give sufficient credence to their feelings and this is an unfortunate state of affairs contributing I feel to stagnation of human thought and progress.

Rwanda: obscuring the truth about the genocide

Armenia's Struggle for Independence

23-08-2008 12:29

Each country must find its own way, shaped by its immediate situation, and seen against the backdrop of its own specific cultural and political history. In the case of Armenia, it is evident that any perspective for real economic progress must be based on cooperation with its neighbors in the context of a regional development perspective. This means negotiating political solutions to the continuing conflicts with Azerbaijan and Turkey, in order to reestablish normal economic and trade relations. To achieve this, requires a capable leadership dedicated to the future of its nation and its people, as well as support from the international community. Armenians are seeking such leadership.

[press release] Police threatens Ecotopia camp in Turkey with eviction

23-08-2008 12:22

In the moment, the participants of the 20th Ecotopia international environmentalist gathering at Sarikum nature reserve, Sinop, on the Turkish Black Sea coast, are awaiting and preparing for forceful eviction of their camp site by the Jandarma (Turkish Police), which are already present with undercover agents and several cars. The 70 participants from over 30 countries will peacefully resist this unjustified raid. The offical reason for the announced eviction was the announcement of the intention to take part in the weekly permitted press conference of the local anti-nuclear initiative SÝNYAD (Sinop Nükleersiz Kent ve Yaþam Derneði).

However, the event lives on and has moved to the rampART ( http://www.rampart.co.nr) and LARC ( http://www.londonarc.org.) After all a free school should not be limited and contained by concrete walls!

23-08-2008 10:30

One of the activists protestors has pointed out how all of us can stop supporting the illegal war and occupation of Iraq through where it can hurt idiot politicians most. The activist referenced the fact that paying taxes has been reduced to a war crime in itself as under Article 25 of the Statutes of Rome, providing the means for a war crimes - paying taxes or fines to a government that is committing war crimes - is also in intself, a war crime.
