Following the election of Richard Barnbrook onto the Greater London Assembly (GLA), Unite Against Fascism and Love Music Hate Racism called a national march and parade against fascism and racism on April 21. A contingent from Nottingham were amongst those who travelled to London to show their opposition to the British National Party (BNP).

More shops to close in Farnborough town centre

Several shops in Farnborough town centre closed or announced their closure in the first half of the year. More shops are now closing down. If the trend continues, soon there will be nothing left of what was once a viable town centre with a wide range and diversity of shops.

Millennium Development Goals, The setting of the agenda

The social context the Education, Gender Empowerment, Poverty Reduction MDGs are critically analysed. It is suggested that the evolution of such goals are instituionally embeded and not only are they far from being attained, but there very definition is deviod of the an understanding of cultures and local goals and objectives such as family and society. The approach emanates from the reconstruction apprroach of the Marshall plan which is difficult to apply to issues of development.

Firgrove Court demolition to begin soon

Firgrove Court awaiting demolition
Demolition of social housing at Firgrove Court is expected to start mid-July 2008 when the last remaining tenants have been kicked out of their homes. The demolition is to make way for a car park for a superstore, part of the unwanted town centre redevelopment in Farnborough.

Detained immigrants started a fire on Sunday at one of France's biggest deportation centres outside Paris. Two buildings burned down. 20 detainees were hospitalized for smoke inhalation. 50 escaped.

Tsvangirai hands victory to Mugabe by dropping out.

Zimbabwe's opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai has pulled out of the presidential run-off because the vote would not be fair. Robert Mugabe has thus won the run-off by default despite official results of first election showing he had lost by about 120,000 votes.

There will be a protest at the Zim embassy in London tomorrow - this news gives even more reason for it to be well attended.
