Earthquake delegation. Musafrabad capital of Kashmir.

03-01-2006 20:31

Our hotel.
We arrive in the capital of Kashmir at night. Our guide from the JKLF tells us that this city saw the highest concentration of earthquake deaths with a latest bodycount of over 40,000. One telling sign is that half our hotel (The Sangham) is leveled to the ground with a number of holes punched in the outside of the half that we are staying in. We are told it is safe as it has so far survived the earthquake and its aftershocks. The next morning we get to see the full extent of the devastation outside.

Earthquake delegation. The ruins of Balakot.

03-01-2006 19:17

The town of Balakot.
Balakot is a small town based at the bottom of a large rural valley in North Eastern Pakistan. Its income was moderate - catering mostly as a stop off point for travellers and tourists heading into Kashmir. Many people comment on how it was previously one of the most beautiful towns in the area. One of our delegation studied here as a young man and had planned to spent his honeymoon here in the picturesque surroundings.

It now looks like it has been hit by an atom bomb.

Earthquake delegation. A meeting with the JKLF.

03-01-2006 19:06

Mr Khan
Before heading into the area affected by the earthquake we meet with Amanullah Khan chairman of Jamal Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF). Most of the region we plan to visit is in Kashmir and local knowledge is essential. The JKLF are a peaceful organization dedicated to gaining independence for Kashmir from India, Pakistan and China all of whom occupy portions of the country. They want a secular independent state that facilitates all the religions and cultures that exist in Kashmir. They have a wide base of support despite being banned from standing in elections. They are not allowed to participate in any ballot due to their refusal to swear allegiance to Pakistan’s military government.

We want your video

03-01-2006 15:16

Do you have a video camera, or a phone that records video clips?
Do you film at protests and political events?

rampART is doing weekly free cinema nights (every thursday from 8pm) and hopes to be able to start each weeks screenings with a short collection of newsreals of recent events from a grassroots perspective.

Submissions should be short (5 mins max), and self contained - ie. they should be editted pieces not raw footage that explain the 'what, where, when, why and how' of the story. (Uneditted clips of less than 1 min would be okay if the person who filmed it is there to present and explain the background.)

These newsreals should be of recent events, eg, stuff that has happened within the last week ideally.

Format wise, pretty much any common screenable quality format would be fine (appart from VHS). DVD, VCD, MPEG4 etc prefered.
