LICENSE TO KILL, LICENSE TO LIE...
23-10-2004 15:02
Some Dutch (and British) also claim and use 'License to Kill' : but it simply does not make sense at all - unless many of the killings, the torture, the kidnappings and bombings, are designed to foment chaos and portray all resistance as 'murderous nihilists and cold-blooded criminals'.Open Letter to British Troops serving in Iraq from Jo Wilding

CALL FOR SEVENOAKS AREA ACTIVISTS
23-10-2004 10:34
As far as I'm aware there is no-one challenging neo-liberal globalisation etc in this area. Am I wrong?Blair and Bush attempting to divide labour from those opposed to occupation
23-10-2004 02:40
The Guardian is starting to run claims by an Iraqi union that they want US troops in Iraq until the election next year. What's strange about this call is that is designed with two purposes in mind. On the one hand Blair hopes that he can weaken opposition to his rule by splitting the antiwar left from the unions. On the other hand, both Bush and Blair don't want unions organizing Iraq and hope that if it settles down it can be a source of low cost labour. Directly attacking the unions would backfire but linking them to support for the occupation is a sure-fire way to destory them... hence the stories written for the GuardianFrench networks statement about the ESF events

22-10-2004 20:32
From 1 January 2005 for one year, Britain will be the 'host' nation of the G8 (group of eight major industrial democracies - not necessarily the 8 richest, nor most democratic). 'Dissent! a network of resistance against the G8' held a stall at last weekends ESF conference, as well as a day long series of packed out workshops on Friday 15 October at the Beyond ESF event. At the Bristol Dissent meeting on 26 October, Bristolians who attended the workshops will report back on the discussions and progress of the campaign.ESF: Encounter or Representation
22-10-2004 19:15
Social Forums are spaces of encounter, or at least they should be. As the Zapatistas noted, encounters offer a mirror and a lens, a means to reflect movements and to focus energies. To find our own struggles refracted through others experiences and in the same process to find these struggles changed, opened and multiplied. Spaces of encounter are fundamentally different to spaces of representation and this difference is at the heart of the organised left failing to understand the concept of a social forum. Whilst a few of them have learned the lyrics, so far the tune evades them.london :: George Orwell was right
